Scottie Scheffler is very much the number one golfer in the world right now but one thing he cannot directly impact is the dreaded TV viewing figures.
Ultimately, TV viewing figures and ratings are what make the world go round when it comes to live sports and the bigger and better they are, the more sponsorship you can attract.
At the moment, that is one thing LIV Golf are struggling with as their viewership drops way below the PGA Tour’s on a regular basis.
For the PGA Tour, though, things have been on an upward trend this season.
However, despite Scheffler dominating at the PGA Championship last weekend, it seems things have taken a bit of a dip compared to the same event in 2024.

PGA Championship viewing figures confirmed as Scottie Scheffler’s wins at Quail Hollow
The PGA Tour take ratings and viewership very seriously indeed and for them, seeing any sort of drop off will always cause a worry.
As for this week’s PGA Championship ratings, well, things are looking a bit down compared to last year.
In stats shared by Josh Carpenter on X, it shows that there was a slight dip of around 4% in the final round figures compared to Xander Schauffele’s 2024 win.
One reason for the drop in figures could well have been the fact that Scheffler was five ahead going into the start of round four.
In the middle of the round, Jon Rahm did temporarily catch Scheffler but on the back nine, the world number one put the afterburners on to cruise to the win.
Can Scottie Scheffler be golf’s new Tiger Woods?
For years, Tiger Woods was the star attraction and a big reason behind why golf was so successful and so many viewers tuned in.
In the modern day, with Tiger winding down, he is still an attraction but golf needs its next bunch of superstars.
Can Scottie Scheffler be that guy? Well, in terms of the golf purist, he is the best player to watch.
However, in terms of personality and drama, he is simply no thrills, which means he is never likely to bring the ratings that Woods did.
Going forward, the PGA Tour needs to work out a way to get Bryson DeChambeau back in more events.
He is very much box office and while Scheffler is brilliant and will win many more events, golf needs characters and drama to keep evolving and DeChambeau and Scheffler are two polar opposites.
