YouTube golf star Peter Finch has suggested Rory McIlroy has been impacted by Tiger Woods’ dominance at the top of the global game.
The 15-time major champion spent a staggering 281 consecutive weeks as world number one from June 2005 to October 2010. Furthermore, between August 1999 and September 2004, Woods spent 264 weeks as the highest-ranked player in the world.
It’s unlikely anyone will ever be able to match the 48-year-old’s dominance. Scottie Scheffler’s recent form has been Tiger-esque, but the two-time Masters champion will need to maintain his current performance level over several years.

Speaking on his Rough Cut Podcast, Finch has suggested that Woods’ dominance has meant “exceptional” players, like McIlroy, are unfairly considered failures due to their inability to win over an extended period.
He explained: “In the modern game, players do seem to go on little runs where they win a number of events in quick succession and maybe don’t have that longevity of the Tiger era. To be honest, it ruined modern golf in many respects. Rory is one of the best players in the world and has been one of the best players in the world for 20 years now.”
“He’s an exceptional player, but you are always going to compare him to another exceptional player, and the most exceptional player of our generation is Tiger, and if you’re not consistently dominating, then it’s almost like you’re failing.”
The YouTube golf star went on to suggest that McIlroy has still had an “incredible” career even if he stops now.
“Rory has won four major championships. Even if he stops now, it’s an incredible career,” he added. “It’s the fact the Masters is so set up for him that he should win it. If he does get across the line at Valhalla, he wins the Open or U.S. Open and wins another one, it’s that feeling of ‘I can still do this’.”

The Northern Irishman has to be considered one of Scheffler’s biggest challengers heading to Valhalla. He was back to his best at Quail Hollow and could be well-suited to what is a big hitters course this week.
If he can place himself in contention, there’s every chance of McIlroy landing a fifth major title at a course that he has enjoyed success at in the past. Experience in the critical moments could prove the difference this week.
Elsewhere, Brooks Koepka will lead the LIV Golf contingent’s chances in Louisville. The five-time major champion is coming off a win in Singapore and could definitely give Scheffler something to think about.
As for Scheffler, the 2024 Masters champion arrived at Valhalla on Monday and, after playing the back nine, was impressed with the course on what is his first visit to the Louisville venue.
