Paul Waring produced one of the shocks of the DP World Tour season after winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

His fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood equalled the course record at Yas Links with his first round 62, only to finish T6.

But Waring went one step further and secured the course record with his second round 61, helping him go on to lift the trophy.

Star name Rory McIlroy could only finish T3, with Waring’s compatriot and LIV Golf ace Tyrrell Hatton finishing second.

Waring now has his second career DP World Tour win with his success at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

And it marks his first win on the tour in over six years, when Waring emerged victorious at the Nordea Masters.

With his latest success, he is now predicted to finish fifth in the Race to Dubai rankings, a huge climb from his previous position in 48th.

He wasn’t aware at the time, but he has now secured a PGA Tour card for the 2025 season, with Waring having issued a jokey response when being told it was highly likely.

“I was quite happy living in Dubai to be honest with you,” he told Sky Sports Golf. “It’s going to be a long way to travel, a long commute over to America. But I’m looking forward to that. It’s a new challenge. I don’t know if that’s the case. Absolutely made up.”

And asked if the celebrations for his Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship win will be good, Waring responded: “I’m a bit worried, actually…”

Waring is certain to celebrate his title for some time, although he does, of course, have another DP World Tour event to focus on.

The DP World Tour Championship arrives next week, with Dubai’s Jumeirah Golf Estates playing host for the final event of the season.

And Waring can certainly be confident of another strong showing, having just seen off very tough tests from the likes of Hatton, McIlroy, Fleetwood and Shane Lowry.

But with his T3 finish in Abu Dhabi, it is McIlroy who is the man to beat in the Race to Dubai rankings, which is a near-impossible task.

The Northern Irishman has won successive Race to Dubai titles, and is currently on course for his sixth overall.
