Being successful in any sport requires the best players to have a competitive edge and former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has claimed there’s one man who has a bigger drive to win than even the great Tiger Woods.

Woods is world-renowned for being ultra-competitive and having a will to win that eclipses most other players in the game.

Woods’ attitude has taken him to more than 80 PGA Tour wins and 15 majors and it’s unlikely we’ll see a player of his talent again.

Of course, the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau have that edge in their game as well, and it’s little wonder they’ve enjoyed the success they’ve had.

But according to Paul McGinley, it’s another European player who stands out as being the most competitive he’s come across.

Paul McGinley says Padraig Harrington has Tiger Woods levels of competitiveness

McGinley was speaking in an interview with The Irish Independent and got onto the subject of competitive golf and his good friend, Padraig Harrington.

And when asked who was the most competitive out of himself and Harrington, McGinley was in no doubt who took the honour.

“Oh Padraig is more competitive. Padraig is the most competitive people in the world. I mean maybe you’d put Tiger up there with him but he’s ferociously competitive, yeah,” McGinley said.

“But it’s competitive with a smile on his face. It’s not a if you beat me I’m never going to speak to you again. He’s the first guy to congratulate you. He loves the battle. You’ve got to love it.”

Padraig Harrington has shown his desire to win

At the end of the day, you don’t win three majors in golf without having plenty about you and it’s little surprise to hear of how competitive Harrington is.

We’ve seen glimpses of it over on his YouTube content as well with how he always wants to win, so to hear McGinley speak about him in these terms isn’t a shock.

Of course, we’ll probably never see someone quite like Tiger Woods again but Harrington has shown that having a strong will to win breeds success.

Indeed, Harrington’s success on the Champions Tour is down to his desire to succeed and you can almost guarantee he’ll continue to win events on that tour in 2025.
