Patrick Cantlay is an extremely solid golfer and he has been one of the best on the PGA Tour over the past four or five years.
However, Cantlay is well-known for being one of the most deliberate players on the PGA Tour.
Just last week, the PGA Tour unveiled a new innovation aimed at tackling slow play, informing the viewers how fast or slow each twosome was playing
So it was no surprise that, during the BMW Championship, Cantlay was sitting at the top of the ‘slow play’ leaderboard.
Despite his average form this season, Cantlay is being backed to make the Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black in September.
The 33-year-old is currently without a win since August 2022, so his opening round of six-under par 64 at the Tour Championship on Thursday would have been an extremely welcome one.
However, after his round at East Lake, conversation quickly switched to the slow play problem that has been plaguing the PGA Tour recently.
Patrick Cantlay says if he felt singled out by new PGA Tour slow play feature
Cantlay is extremely deliberate when he plays, especially when he’s on the greens.
So did the TV broadcasters single him out last week at Caves Valley?

Cantlay was asked what he thought of the new slow play feature that was used by the TV broadcasters during the BMW Championship.
He said: “I know, I talked to a lot of guys last week. The course was playing really tough, so almost every group was behind time par.“
One reporter then said: “They chose you.“
To which Cantlay responded: “Yeah, obviously I’m not in control of the broadcast or what kind of stuff they put on there. But I’m not really worried about it. I’m trying to make the lowest score out there.“
Playing devil’s advocate, perhaps Cantlay should be worried by his pace of play.
Youngsters are watching PGA Tour players these days and learning from what they see. These top players have a big responsibility to ensure that slow play doesn’t become the ‘norm’.
What Michael Kim said about Patrick Cantlay’s pace of play
Back in June, Michael Kim made a claim about how Cantlay plays.
He said: “Patrick Cantlay gets a bad rap on being slow lol. He takes a bit extra over the ball which is when TV shows him but he takes no practice swings and quick to the ball so in the end he’s nowhere close to being the slowest guy out here.“
So maybe Cantlay does get a bad rap on the PGA Tour when it comes to slow play.
In fairness to him, it does seem to be a problem ‘Tour-wide’, so to speak.
And despite what Kim said, Cantlay is unquestionably one of the slower players on the PGA Tour, whether he admits that or not.
