Padraig Harrington has suggested a big change TPC Sawgrass must make ahead of the 2025 Players Championship.

Scottie Scheffler was the man to land his second consecutive Players title after shooting eight-under in his final round to fend off Xander Schauffele by one shot.

It was undoubtedly a pulsating tournament in March with large swathes of the field shooting well below par.

Despite the low scoring, Harrington has claimed the competition must make one huge decision ahead of the 2025 renewal.

Currently, LIV Golf rebels aren’t permitted to feature at The Players Championship, something Harrington feels should change.

Speaking ahead of the Senior PGA Championship, the Irishman has claimed the event should be inclusive to the best players in the world.

He told NBC: “I believe that TPC Sawgrass should be spun out as an individual event so LIV players can play in it. If Sawgrass wants to be known as the fifth major, well, they’ve got to invite the best players in the world.

“That means they’ve got to spin out somehow and be a stand-alone event. The PGA Tour can own it, but it was to be a stand-alone event that you can invite all the best players in the world to play in, and it creates drama.”

Something needs to give between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour

The PGA Tour and the PIF are still locked in negotiations nearly six months after the December 31 deadline.

Golf needs a resolution.

Last week’s PGA Championship demonstrated why the likes of Bryson DeChambeau are needed back on Tour.

Greg Norman has poached some of the PGA Tour’s biggest characters, who have proven to be irreplaceable.

It’s a message that’s continuously repeated, but LIV isn’t going anywhere. It’s a case of learning to work with the breakaway tour moving forward and accepting its presence.

Failure to do so will put the long-term future of the game in jeopardy.
