‘Opened the door’…Jon Rahm shares what made him to speak to LIV Golf in the first place

Jon Rahm has been speaking about all things golf and opened up on why he initially entertained the idea of moving to LIV Golf.

The Spaniard became the biggest signing in LIV history when he made the jump at the end of 2023 ahead of the new season

Rahm enjoyed a stellar opening weekend with LIV too, helping his Legion XIII team to the team trophy with fellow big-name signing, Tyrrell Hatton.

Of course, Rahm’s move has brought a lot of eyeballs to LIV and raised further questions about wider issues within the game.

But speaking to Golf.com, Rahm has opened up on why he initially thought of making the jump.

John Rahm shares why he first started talking to LIV Golf

Answering a range of questions around the subject, Rahm was honest with his answers and admitted that winning The Masters, as well as the PGA engaging with the PIF, convinced him to at least enter talks.

“Winning The Masters was a huge step towards thinking about it. Being exempt for the majors, knowing you can play The Masters and the US Open until at least 2031, so I’m set with two of those. It was a big determining factor. The dynamics in golf changed a bit and I think what opened the door a little bit for me was that the PGA Tour and PIF struck this agreement. So when that happened I was like well we are definitely coming together, there’s something happening, so I owe it to myself at least to hear what LIV have to offer and what the vision is. I owed it to myself to hear them out and that’s what I did,” Rahm said.

Rahm deserves some credit

Yes, there’ll always be critics when it comes to making the move to LIV and taking a huge sum of money and turning his back on the PGA Tour. But in this interview, Rahm at least comes across as honest.

He openly admits the money is a big factor in talks and doesn’t simply push the line out about growing the game as some do.

Rahm has obviously seen a chance to earn big bucks here and set his family up for generations to come and in some way, he’s probably had decent foresight in doing so.

Somewhere down the line this will all come together anyway and when Rahm looks back, he’ll probably be content with the decision.
