Nico Echavarría will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the ZOZO Championship at Accordia Narashino Country Club in Japan.

The Colombian carded a five-under 65 on Saturday and is clear of in-form Justin Thomas, who is seeking his first victory in over two years.

Echavarría carded five birdies and an eagle and sits at 17 under. American Max Greyserman is also in contention and is three shots back.

Speaking after his round, Echavarría pinpointed an important moment that ultimately gave him the lead heading into the final 18.

Echavarría’s approach to the par-five 18th was eye-catching. The Colombian stiffed his 241-yard five-wood for a kick-in eagle.

After Thomas only made par, the remarkable approach could well prove vital come close to play on Sunday. Speaking after his round, Echavarría admitted visibility was diminishing just before his superb approach.

“It was very special,” the ZOZO Championship leader said. “It was very hard to see out there at the end. It was dark and gloomy. I couldn’t tell how close it was.

“When I heard the roar, and when I got up there, and it was almost tap in, it was very good. It was a five-wood. I had a perfect number for a middle of the green five wood and was trying to cut it a little. Maybe pushed it a hair, but it was perfect.”

Nico Echavarría targets win number two at the ZOZO Championship

Echavarría has won once previously on the PGA Tour, coming at the 2023 Puerto Rico Open.

A victory at the ZOZO, however, would feel far more significant. The field at this week’s event is stacked, with Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Sahith Theegala and Hideki Matsuyama all present.

If the Colombian were to triumph, it would be a significant moment in his career. And ahead of Sunday’s final round, Echavarria has detailed his game plan as he looks to extend Thomas’ winless run.

Thomas, however, will provide stern competition on Sunday. The 2022 PGA Championship winner is dialled and knows how to get big tournament wins over the line.

Furthermore, considering Thomas’ winless run, he will be absolutely desperate to get the job done at Accordia Narashino Country Club.
