Sir Nick Faldo thinks he knows exactly why Scottie Scheffler’s Ryder Cup record in the foursomes format is so poor.
Scheffler was handsomely beaten 5&3 in the Ryder Cup foursomes on Friday morning, as he toiled alongside Russell Henley against Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg at Bethpage Black.
Faldo is well-known for pulling no punches when certain players are struggling with their games, and he lived up to that reputation when delivering his assessment on the current world number one.
Scheffler spoke after his Ryder Cup foursomes defeat on Friday and suggested that he and Henley simply didn’t hole enough putts.
Back in 2021, Scheffler’s career actually kick-started at the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.
He hasn’t looked back on the PGA Tour since, but his Ryder Cup foursomes record still flatters to deceive.
Nick Faldo offers theory why Scottie Scheffler has been so bad in Ryder Cup foursomes
Faldo is on commentary duty for both American and British TV companies this week.
His attention turned to Scheffler after he was dealt a hammering by the Europeans on Friday morning.
And the six-time major champion offered a theory as to why the world number one has been so poor in that particular format over the past three Ryder Cups.
He said: “Scottie’s numbers are frighteningly bad. He’s played 40 holes in his last few matches and he’s only won three holes and lost 18 holes.

“He’s hurting on the art of playing match-play, something is not quite right. Tiger didn’t have a great record in foursomes and four-balls.
“Because you’re world number one, if Europe can take you down it’s worth more than just a point, it’s an emotional win.
“He knows he’s under pressure, he’s got to come out and produce.“
It’s a fair point from Faldo. However, it has to be said that his game hasn’t been anywhere good enough every time he has played a foursomes match.
That needs to change going forward.
Scottie Scheffler’s Ryder Cup record
It’s clear to see from Scheffler’s overall results at the Ryder Cup that something is definitely missing when it comes to the foursomes format.
Here is his Ryder Cup record in its entirety:
| Results | Scheffler’s totals |
| Matches played | 8 |
| Wins | 2 |
| Losses | 3 |
| Halves | 3 |
| Total points | 3.5 |
| Foursomes record | 0-3-0 |
| Fourballs record | 1-0-2 |
| Singles record | 1-0-1 |
Three losses in all three foursomes matches he has played is incredibly poor from Scheffler.
Something has to change. Either the United States find him a better partner or he seriously needs to up his game.
The truth of the matter is that the answer lies in both of those solutions.
Scheffler needs to be a real leader at the Ryder Cup for Team USA and his performances in the foursomes matches are making it impossible for him to be exactly that.
