Min Woo Lee is one of the two players set to make their Presidents Cup debut for the International team at Royal Montreal later this month, with the Australian receiving a captain’s pick from Mike Weir on Tuesday.

Min Woo Lee certainly gave himself a fantastic chance of making the team, with the 26-year-old finishing ninth in the qualification standings after a promising first year as a full-time member of the PGA Tour.

Of course, he will be a part of an International side looking for only its second ever victory in the Presidents Cup. The fightback at Quail Hollow two years ago however, arguably shows the potential the International team could have, particularly if they get off to a better start in Canada.

Weir has some obvious pairings he can rely on, with Tom Kim and Si-woo Kim stealing the show two years ago. Meanwhile, Adam Scott will bring up a half century of matches in the Presidents Cup the first time he tees it up in Montreal.

Min Woo Lee says playing with two teammates at Presidents Cup would be ‘amazing’

In fact, Lee has a couple of ideal mentors on the team, with Jason Day set to make his fifth appearance in the event.

Lee was asked on Golf Channel about the potential partners he could have in the event, and he suggested that he would be delighted to have the opportunity to play with either of his countrymen.

“To be honest, I have pretty full confidence in this team. There’s a lot of great players and a lot of straight players, I’m a long bomber but I tend to miss some fairways now and then, so it’s nice to have a team that’s very straight and hit fairways and unbelievable approach players,” he said.

“Obviously, the Australians will be amazing to play with, Adam and Jason, and I’ve played a lot with them in practice rounds and tournaments. Just to be around them, it’s cool. We have a scouting trip that we’re on right now, and it’s amazing to learn off them a little bit, just getting that sense of foursome and fourball team aspect, so it’s very cool to be around them and learn from them.”

A glimpse of the Internationals’ future

This is likely to be the first of many appearances in the Presidents Cup for Lee. He is one of the four players on the International side yet to reach 30 years of age, and he deserves enormous credit for what he has done this year without having the advantage of automatically making the signature events.

Perhaps you could criticise Lee for not doing more in the events with weaker fields, as he only has two top 10s throughout the season. But he is someone who is going to make plenty of birdies at the Presidents Cup, and if Weir partners him with the right person, he could perhaps be the star of the show in the same way Tom Kim was in 2022.
