Mike Weir looked on and could do nothing as his Internationals lost out to Team USA at the Presidents Cup this weekend.

The Internationals had fought back from an opening day whitewash but effectively threw things away on Saturday as they struggled in both the foursomes and four-balls.

Of course, Weir came in for some strong criticism for how he handled things on Saturday. Weir opted to go with the same pairings for both formats and Brad Faxon admitted he couldn’t believe Weir had made that decision.

Likewise, Smylie Kaufmann also questioned Weir’s decision to sit Min Woo Lee out for much of the tournament.

And when pressed on those decisions, Weir himself admitted he’d have a lot of time for reflection.

Mike Weir responds to Presidents Cup critics

Speaking to the media immediately after seeing his team lose, Weir was asked if he’d do anything differently.

And as expected, Weir admitted that there’d be a lot for him to reflect on.

“Oh, of course I’m going to be thinking about things I would have done differently,” Weir said.

“I think that’s human nature, when you don’t win, you’re going to look at yourself in the mirror and see what you could have done different, no doubt about it. I have plenty of time to do that after.”

Weir got it wrong on Saturday

Brad Faxon made a great point on this but Mike Weir will definitely look back on the Saturday and feel he messed up.

As mentioned, there was fog delays, and then two gruelling formats to squeeze into one day and sending out the same pairings for each round was a big and baffling call.

Of course, you live and die by the sword and Weir will simply have to swallow it and accept he got it wrong.

However, it does feel like a chance missed for the Internationals here and with it now ten in a row for Team USA, you do wonder if they’ll ever get that long-awaited second win.
