Tiger Woods has been present for a couple of the biggest moments in the amazing career of Mike Weir, the only male from Canada to win a major championship.

Of course, Mike Weir‘s greatest triumph came at The Masters back in 2003. The left-hander won at Augusta National following a playoff with Len Mattiace.

It was Tiger Woods who had the job of placing the green jacket upon Weir’s shoulders.

Meanwhile, it was Woods who lost to Weir in dramatic fashion during the Sunday singles at the 2007 Presidents Cup. The event was played at Royal Montreal, making the victory particularly special for Weir.

Weir now plies his trade on PGA Tour Champions. His only top 10 in 2025 came when the 55-year-old finished ninth at the PURE Insurance Championship in September.

That speaks to the depth on the senior tour. And Weir is optimistic that a further boost for the circuit is just around the corner.

Speaking on 5 Clubs about PGA Tour Champions’ potential, Weir explained that the tour is in a fantastic position, particularly with perhaps the greatest player of all-time set to turn 50 this month.

“The major champions continuing to play, play well [is the most important thing for PGA Tour Champions]. I think guys of your generation, my generation grew up watching and watched us guys and we’re still playing at a high level,” he said.

“There’s the little carrot out there that hopefully Tiger plays some. That would be wonderful if he gets out there and gets his competitive juices going again. I would love to see that.

“There’s a lot of positivity around the tour. I think anybody who goes and watches sees a really high standard. Our interactions with the pro-ams are wonderful and I think it keeps continuing to grow. And the standard continues to be really high. It’s really high quality golf.

“We might not be as powerful as the younger guys on the tour and hit it as far, but the skills are there still. And the work ethic is still there from everyone. So I think the sky’s the limit for the Champions Tour. I think it’s really going to continue and evolve and get better.”

Tiger Woods playing PGA Tour Champions could be a game-changer for the senior circuit

Obviously, all eyes are on Woods. He has undergone surgery on both his Achilles and his back in 2025. With that, he has not played on the PGA Tour or in a major this year.

Woods has not publicly suggested a timeframe for his return. So it remains to be seen whether he feels that he can compete on the senior tour in the coming years.

What golfers have said about Tiger Woods joining the PGA Tour Champions

“It would be a thrill to see Tiger come out and play the Champions Tour, and I’m convinced he will play several. Depends how many. I’m going to gradually get older and older here, and I may not be at the very top of my game when he comes out, but he always moves the needle. He’s a very exciting personality to watch, and it would be fantastic for Tiger and for our tour to be competing out there, and I think all the players would welcome him.”

Bernhard Langer

“I’ve said, please come play. And I think it can only be beneficial to him. He will get himself in golf shape. You can ride a cart without any shame and if there was one guy that should be able to drive a cart, it’s him… and he can get his a** back in shape.”

Ernie Els

“I think it would be super for the [PGA Tour Champions] if Tiger is able to play. Great for sponsors, tv, etc. And we will all begin our rounds looking for his name on the board. Where is he? Do we have a chance? Hopefully we do, but maybe not.”

Colin Montgomerie

It could be a game-changer for PGA Tour Champions. Notah Begay III noted that Woods is as good as ever when it comes to striking the ball. And he can now use a cart to get around the course.

Woods may not be the force he once was. His days of winning the biggest events may be behind him now.

However, there is still a huge appetite to see Woods playing and competing – as shown by last year’s PNC Championship.

It really could make such a difference to the senior tour if Woods does indeed decide that he has still got a point to prove.
