The possibility of rule changes on the PGA Tour has been a constant topic of discussion over the past year or so.

Now Michael Kim has had his say on a rule change that would simply make the game fairer for everyone on the PGA Tour.

Kim won for the first time on the DP World Tour in France earlier this year, while he has one PGA Tour victory to his name as well.

The University of California graduate is a hugely popular figure in the golfing world, mostly due to his insightfulness on social media platforms.

He is extremely outspoken concerning a wide range of topics and golf fans respect him for his honesty and openness.

Michael Kim’s message to PGA Tour players about the DP World Tour

We get to go to fantastic different countries. The PGA Tour mostly sticks to America, which is great, but coming to places like Abu Dhabi, Dubai, France, and India, I personally really enjoy. The competition is still great, and I thoroughly enjoy my time here.

Now Kim has offered his opinion on one big change he would like to see the PGA Tour make immediately.

Michael Kim urges the PGA Tour to change one specific golf rule

Kim took part in a Q&A session on Sunday evening, after his 2025 season came to a close at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

And the 32-year-old responded when asked what rule he would like to see changed before the start of the 2026 season.

Kim took to his official X account and said: Plugged lies in the fairway, even if it’s not yours, you get a free drop.

A fan then replied to Kim: Doesn’t that already exist?

To which Kim responded by saying: It has to be yours to get a drop.

The PGA Tour really should consider changing this rule as soon as possible.

It’s incredibly unfair that players have to play their ball as it lies if it ends up in a pitch mark in the middle of the fairway that was made by another player.

In fact, one incident occurred three years ago that proved exactly why the PGA Tour should consider changing the plugged lie in the fairway rule.

Do you think golfers should receive a free drop from divots in the fairway?

Paul Casey incident an example of why the PGA Tour must enact change

Paul Casey had a real chance to win The Players Championship at Sawgrass in 2022, when disaster struck on the 16th hole during his final round.

Cameron Smith went on to win the tournament in the end, bettering Casey by two strokes.

However, things could have been so different had Kim’s rule change suggestion been put into practice back in 2022.

Casey ripped his drive down the middle of the par-five 16th fairway on day four of The Players Championship.

However, when he reached his ball, he was visibly distraught after seeing his ball buried at the bottom of a plug mark made by another player in one of the groups ahead of him.

The green would have been easily in range for Casey if his ball avoided the pitch mark, but he was forced to lay up instead, and made an extremely frustrating par in the end.

It was one of the worst breaks you will ever see but the PGA Tour has the power to prevent it from happening again.

Whether they will heed Kim’s advice remains to be seen, though.
