There is arguably a different kind of pressure on Xander Schauffele’s shoulders heading into the Presidents Cup, with 2024 elevating the 30-year-old to superstar status on the PGA Tour.

Xander Schauffele is going to be a crucial player for Jim Furyk‘s team this week. It is easy to forget now, but he was actually the last player to qualify automatically for the Ryder Cup in Rome last year.

But he has since won two major titles and established himself as one of the top two players in the world. While there was little question that Scottie Scheffler was the player of the year, it seems that most players would have preferred to have had Schauffele’s season.

Schauffele has long been considered one of the most reliable players on the American team in Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups, as he prepares to make his fifth team appearance this week at Royal Montreal. He has won 10 points from 17 matches, while he now has 15 top 10s in the major championships.

What people say about Xander Schauffele which annoys Max Homa

That consistency however, has perhaps led to a misconception about the world number two – and that is clearly something which has annoyed Max Homa.

“I’ve known Xander a long time. It’s always funny when people say you get to see a different side of him. I fortunately and unfortunately get to see this side of him. He is a pot stirrer. He is witty, funny. He’s just everything you’d want in like a buddy. So it always irks me when people are like, oh, he’s so boring. I’ve seen that so much,” he said.

“It’s been fun seeing him be so successful this year, and I feel like more has come out about how great of a guy he is and great teammate, all those things. He just talks a lot of —-. He’s just been absolutely abusing Brandt this week. So it’s been quite fun.

“I think that’s the beauty of Xander is I think people think he’s boring because he has his golf mode and it works really, really well, so I would never change that. I just think he’s been interviewed more and people don’t ask him the same dumb question of why haven’t you won more,” he added.

“I think, yeah, I think he – just getting to actually answer questions when he’s winning two majors a year, it’s not as – it’s not those typical questions. It’s more questions that you would want to be asked. Yeah, I think that’s probably helped the most. But no, he’s never changed. He’s always been a kind dude, like I said, talks a lot of trash, confident, but in all the best ways.”

Now getting the recognition he deserves

It is funny to see how players’ golf games can dictate how they are sometimes viewed by the fans. Certainly, few would have imagined that Sam Burns would name Scottie Scheffler as the class clown of the American team at the Presidents Cup.

However, many golfers do show parts of their personality on the golf course, so that does make it easy for fans to perhaps come to conclusions, which can be wide of the mark.

Clearly, Schauffele is a huge figure on the golf course for the US. And Homa appears to be pleased that he is being recognised as a hugely important figure in the locker room too.
