Max Homa has named the shot from last year’s Ryder Cup which proved to be the most nervous moment of his career to date.

There is no question that Max Homa was the biggest success story on the American team last year in Rome.

After three sessions, Zach Johnson’s men appeared to be heading for a colossal defeat. Europe led by 9.5-2.5. And the visitors appeared to be in disarray.

The only American players to win two matches before the final day were Homa and Brian Harman. But their performance in that afternoon session on Saturday gave Johnson’s side faint hopes of securing a win as miraculous as Brookline or Medinah.

By the time Homa’s match with Matthew Fitzpatrick reached the 18th hole, Europe were half a point away from victory. But that did not tell the full story, with all of the momentum out on the course seemingly with America.

Max Homa says Ryder Cup shot was the most nervous he’s been in his career

And thus, it is no surprise that Homa told The Scoop that playing that hole marked the most nervous he has ever been on a golf course.

“18 at the Ryder Cup. We had the sweetest 20 to 30 minutes of hope. And I got the 14th hole and I looked and we were going to tie or lose a couple matches. We were going to win quite a few. And right behind my name it was a sea of red,” he said.

“I was doing the math, and I was like, ‘oh my gosh, we could pull off the coolest comeback ever’. And then I looked a little bit closer and I thought, ‘oh my god, it’s going to come down to this match’. If I push my match we lose.

“And as I’ve said before, I’ve dreamt, I think everyone has, of making a putt to win the Ryder Cup. I’ve never dreamt of making a putt not to lose it. And there’s something weird about it. So that whole 16 through 18, million thoughts going through your head. Just trying to calm yourself down.

“That putt, I was shaking like a leaf. It’s unfortunate we didn’t win. We gave it a helluva run. But it’s something I hold near and dear as far as a learning moment. I will never, I don’t think, feel like that again.”

America did unbelievably to set up tense finish

Homa’s point would make the score 14-9. And America would get to within three before the final three matches proved to be enough to get Luke Donald’s men over the line.

America seemed to have no right to set up a grandstand finish after not winning a single match on the opening day.

But the 6-6 final session does not do justice to what they managed to achieve at the very end.

And with guys like Homa at the peak of their powers, Europe have got an unbelievable task on their hands trying to regain the trophy next year.
