Max Homa has already submitted a contender for the weirdest scorecard of the year on the PGA Tour with his opening round at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Of course, Max Homa is a former champion at the Farmers Insurance Open. But he has got a monumental task on his hands if he is going to secure a seventh PGA Tour title this week, with the 34-year-old already 14 shots off the lead in San Diego.

Remarkably, Homa did not make a single birdie in his round of 77 on the South Course. He did however, manage to make an eagle, while his back nine consisted of nine pars.

The damage, unfortunately, was largely done on the first hole as Homa made a triple bogey – despite finding himself in the green-side bunker for two.

Homa would end up in the bunker on the other side of the green for three, and – perhaps fearing flying the putting surface once again – remained in there after his fourth shot. A three-putt would prove to be the icing on the cake.

Unfortunately, there was not a great deal of sympathy from his Jupiter Links teammate Kevin Kisner. Kisner provided arguably the moment of TGL so far when he thinned his bunker shot which smashed into the pin, preventing it from flying across the arena.

To make the moment all the more delicious, Kisner nearly then holed the chip he was left with – leaving the likes of Homa and Tiger Woods in hysterics. And the USA Ryder Cup vice-captain suggested that he had inspired Homa at Torrey Pines.

Homa himself, would respond, noting that he was unable to produce the same accuracy as Kisner had done.

The reasons for encouragement as Homa faces huge fight to make the cut

It has been a tricky start to the new season for Homa. He finished tied for 26th at The Sentry after a decent week at Kapalua. But clearly, he has got his work cut out if he is going to make the cut this week.

However, there are reasons for encouragement. He was 28th in the field for strokes gained off the tee on Wednesday, while – quite remarkably – he actually gained shots on the field around the greens.

Driving had been a real problem at times for Homa in 2024. So not all hope is lost. And perhaps his opening round score will actually free him up for Thursday.
