Matthew Wolff has shared what he has particularly loved about being on the same team as Bubba Watson on LIV Golf, having joined RangeGoats GC ahead of the 2024 season.

Wolff was one of the players to make the jump to LIV back in 2022, just as the breakaway tour stunned the sport by poaching a number of big names from the PGA Tour.

Wolff spent the 2023 season on Smash GC, led by Brooks Koepka. But ahead of this season, the 25-year-old was traded with Talor Gooch.

He now plays alongside Bubba Watson, Peter Uihlein and Thomas Pieters, and it is Wolff who leads the way on the individual standings for his side, sitting in 16th place in on the ladder after fourth and third place finishes earlier in the year.

Watson actually finds himself in the drop zone right now – though, as captain, he is exempt from relegation. The two-time Masters champion has actually not registered a top-20 finish on LIV this season, with the 45-year-old seemingly well past the peak of his career.

However, it seems that Wolff has nothing but good things to say about Watson as a captain, noting on Fairway to Heaven that he is an ideal leader at this stage of his own career.

“Joining Bubba’s team, it was so awesome, because he cares more about how you are, how you act, how you carry yourself, the man you are, then he does in your golf score,” he said.

“I think he knows, he has confidence in all of us that we can all play good and we’re putting in the work and doing what we need to do in order to play the best we can. And everyone’s different, we all have different routines, we all like to do different things, but at the end of the day, that’s the most important thing.”

LIV landscape likely to change significantly when experienced players step aside in coming years

A number of the team captains on LIV are the players who are coming towards the end of their careers at the highest level, with seven teams led by players now aged 40 or older.

It will be interesting to see how that transition is handled where those experienced players presumably step aside, and potentially allow people like Wolff to take on more of a leadership role during tournament weeks.

Watson is someone who is always going to attract support due to the way he plays the game. He is emotional, he is creative, and he provides a lot of fun, so it is going to be a loss to the tour when he is no longer playing.

Clearly his teammates hope that it is some time before Watson steps aside.
