It is baffling that it seems to have taken the PGA Tour so long to recognise how important eradicating slow play is going to be if they are going to keep viewers interested in the large majority of their events.

It has been a difficult start to the year on the PGA Tour. The Sentry attracted poor viewing figures, while fans hit out at The American Express after a final round which took almost six hours. It was a similar story at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Thankfully, Rory McIlroy winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Jordan Spieth contending at the WM Phoenix Open has taken some of the focus away from some of the bigger issues the PGA Tour is dealing with. However, it seems imperative that the pace of play improves.

The PGA Tour monitors how long each player takes on average. But perhaps they would not need to actually publish the list for the fans to know who the slowest players on tour are.

Caddie criticises PGA Tour star who’s ‘as slow as they come’

Tom Kim is well-known for being in no rush when over the golf ball. Kim is such a livewire in the current game. The South Korean has had some fantastic moments in the Presidents Cup where he has fired the crowd up, while Kim was the star of his TGL debut.

However, it appears that he can frustrate those around him, with Billy Foster telling Sky Sports during the third round of the WM Phoenix Open that the 22-year-old can be painfully slow out on the course.

“Yeah, I’ve fallen asleep on my head covers leaning on the bag waiting for him to hit a shot now and again, yeah,” he said.

“He’s as slow as it comes, get on with it will you.”

Why TGL does Tom Kim few favours

Kim is likely to be under the spotlight now that he is involved in TGL. Of course, the main success story from TGL has been the shot clock which has ensured that each match does not take an absolute age to complete.

Kim had no problem complying with the shot clock on his first appearance. So the question, for many, will be why exactly can he not play faster on the PGA Tour.

Obviously, the stakes are much higher on tour. TGL should not be taken anywhere near as seriously as tour events. But it definitely does show that taking that amount of time over the ball really is not that necessary.
