Mackenzie Hughes has shared what he has experienced at the RBC Canadian Open which he has never had during his career, with the 33-year-old very much in contention in Ontario.

Mackenzie Hughes is currently leading the Canadian charge at the Canadian Open, with Hughes currently tied for second at Hamilton Golf and Country Club, four shots back of Robert MacIntyre.

Of course, many attending this week will be dreaming of someone emulating Nick Taylor and taking the title on home soil, and as things stand, Hughes is the man best placed to do that.

Hughes suggested that he cannot remember the last time he had this amount of fun on the golf course, and he was asked about those comments in his press conference after his third round 67 on Saturday.

And he explained that the reaction that he has got from the crowd is so unique compared to what he is often used to.

“Not that I don’t enjoy playing everyday, it was more just the fact that I never get cheered for like this before, really ever, because when I’m playing in the US, I’m pretty much a nobody,” he said.

“So being here at home, you feel like they’re really pulling you across the line and that’s, like I said on the radio, on a lot of the tees and greens, I made a putt on 10, it was goosebumps, chills. The putt went in, the crowd went nuts, and just some of those moments and those things I felt, I’ll remember for a long time.”

Remarkable play-off record will give Canadian real hope

The atmosphere is definitely going to be something special while Hughes is in contention to secure his third PGA Tour title on Sunday.

The likes of Corey Connors and Taylor Pendrith appear to have a little too much to do to put themselves in contention, but a low round from either will only help inspire the crowd and possibly Hughes.

What is interesting is you would imagine that Hughes – being four back – would definitely take ending up in a play-off right now.

Not only did that add to the drama of Taylor’s win last year, but both of Hughes’ PGA Tour wins have come in play-offs.

If he is able to take McIntyre the distance, you would not be surprised if Hughes was the one able to find that extra gear.
