Some of Rory McIlroy’s best career moments have happened whilst representing Europe at the Ryder Cup.
Since making his debut in 2010, McIlroy has won 16 matches, drawn four and lost 13 times. Furthermore, he’s won the Ryder Cup on five occasions: 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2023.
McIlroy played a crucial role in the Miracle at Medinah, which saw Jose Maria Olazábal’s side produce a stunning comeback during Sunday’s singles.
The Northern Irishman, however, used to hold a differing view on the event.

Before the 2010 edition at Celtic Manor, McIlroy claimed the Ryder Cup was merely an exhibition. “The Ryder Cup is a great spectacle but an exhibition at the end of the day, and it should be there to be enjoyed. In the big scheme of things, it’s not that important to me,” he said.
European captain Colin Montgomerie was far from pleased with the 21-year-old’s comments. “The Ryder Cup is most definitely not an exhibition,” he said. ‘Having played in it, having experienced the emotion and the stress of it, I can assure you of that. Indeed, if I manage to lead Europe to victory next year, it will be the greatest achievement of my career. Now look, don’t try to build this up into some sort of big row between me and Rory.”
Now, current captain Luke Donald believes McIlroy’s comments were mainly because he hadn’t experienced a Ryder Cup before.
The Englishman said in a recent interview with journalist Dan Rapaport: “You know, a lot of those comments were before he had played one, and you just don’t understand until you’re in that sort of cauldron of pressure and energy and not wanting to let your teammates down and the difference between winning and losing, he’s been on both sides. You saw the emotion he had in Whistling Straights.”

After Europe’s heavy defeat at Whistling Straights in 2021, McIlroy struggled to hold his emotions together during a post-tournament interview. It was clear the Ryder Cup defeat hit the four-time major winner hard. Few care about the Ryder Cup more than McIlroy, which is remarkable when considering his comments 16 years ago.
Before the 2023 event in Rome, McIlroy reacted to the remarks and admitted he was naive. “I said that in my naivety as a young swashbuckling lad. I know I have been a part of the Ryder Cup a lot, and those three quotes couldn’t be further from the truth.”
Before McIlroy calls time on his career, winning a second Ryder Cup on US soil would further cement his position as an all-time European great. After the success of Donald’s team in Rome, the Northern Irishman will be confident that the 12-man side will retain the famous trophy in New York.
