Ludvig Aberg handed Scottie Scheffler the biggest loss in Ryder Cup history in 2023.
Alongside Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg broke a Ryder Cup record by beating Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka 9 and 7 on Saturday morning. It was the biggest win in any 18-hole match in Ryder Cup history, foursomes or otherwise.
With that win, Aberg burst onto scene as one of Europe’s elite players. Meanwhile, Scheffler was reduced to tears, and Europe cruised to a Ryder Cup win.
In the build-up to the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, Aberg was asked if he took pride in making Scheffler cry.

Ludvig Aberg calls Ryder Cup win over Scottie Scheffler a ‘freak result’
Aberg dismissed the suggestion that he took any sense of pride over embarrassing the world number one, Scheffler. Instead, he took the result as validation of his own talent, playing alongside teammates he had hardly met before going to Rome.
He explained to reporters before the 2025 Ryder Cup, “It’s not something I think about. Obviously, that day, it was somewhat of a freak result and something that we didn’t quite expect. But it was a cool experience that me and Viktor had, and it was a cool thing to do.
“I think the biggest thing that I take away from those couple days, and maybe especially that morning, was just the validation for myself, that I’m able to do that.
“Because obviously, before I played in Rome, I hadn’t even met those guys. I had never shaken their hands. I had never had a conversation with them.
“For me to get there and to bring out a result like that was a big deal for me personally, to know that I’m able to beat those guys at times. I’m able to compete and play good golf against them. That’s the biggest thing that I take away.
“I had a really good partner that day, which always helps. But it was a cool experience and probably something that I won’t forget.”
Both Aberg and Hovland have been in poor form in 2025. But having that positive experience from 2023 will give them both confidence that they can go head-to-head with anyone in New York.
Ludvig Aberg explains why his partnership with Viktor Hovland is so successful
Aberg and Hovland played three matches together in 2023 and went 2-1-0. They formed a formidable foursome pairing, going undefeated in that event together.
Aberg explained that his success alongside Hovland, in part, was due to their cultural similarities, coming from Sweden and Norway, respectively.
He explained, “We’re good friends. We speak the same language. We come from a very similar background. Obviously, he grew up in Norway, and Sweden is very close in terms of the cultural environment. And we get along. He’s a funny guy to have funny conversations with.
“We had a good time in Rome, and we’ve played multiple practice rounds since, and our caddies get along great, too. He’s a good friend to have on Tour and in the team room here.”
The pair are likely to be rolled out again in New York. Team USA vice-captain Brandt Snedeker said Luke Donald would be crazy not to use the same pairings from Rome. Their experience and confidence as a team could be pivotal for Europe’s hopes of an away win.
