Ludvig Aberg was one of the big name players to keep himself in the mix to win The Genesis as the likes of Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler slipped away from contention.
With many expecting McIlroy and Scheffler to kick on, the duo struggled big time in round three and now face an uphill battle to reel in Patrick Rodgers and Denny McCarthy at the summit.
For Aberg, though, winning remains a big possibility. The Swede is just two back of Rodgers and given his quality, he could quite easily eat into that lead.
Of course, it’s a shame to not see Aberg going head to head with McIlroy and Scheffler.
But according to Aberg himself, that’s the beauty of Torrey Pines.

Ludvig Aberg’s Torrey Pines verdict as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler struggle
Aberg was speaking to the media after his impressive third round kept him in contention.
However, the chat soon turned to Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, with Aberg asked just why they might have struggled around the San Diego course.
“It’s hard. Off the tee it’s hard, but the good thing or the cool thing I think about this course is, I mean I had a front row seat to Patrick today, he played amazing and he was great off the tee. You can be rewarded and have a lot of good chances into the greens, but as soon as you start missing the fairways, it gets pretty difficult, you’ve got to scramble,” Aberg said.
“It sort of becomes more of a get the ball up and down as much as you can. It’s a great golf course, it’s a U.S. Open golf course and it definitely played that way today I thought.”
It could have been so much better for Ludvig Aberg
While the European star is in the mix to win, he could very easily have been clear of the field already.
A hole in one on hole three set him up perfectly for a big day but inconsistencies snook into his game and he actually gave a number of shots away.
Aberg made four bogeys in his round, including three in five holes on the back nine that essentially allowed everyone else breathing room.
Mixed in with those birdies and the ace on three were another four birdies though.
If Aberg can cut the mistakes out in round four, then he might just come out on top.
