It is difficult to know what to make of Ludvig Aberg’s record in the major championships in the early stages of his career, with the Swede set to make only his eighth major start at this week’s Open Championship.

The high hopes for Ludvig Aberg‘s career reached another level when he marked his major championship debut by finishing second at The Masters in 2023. And he registered another top 10 at Augusta National one year later, when he actually had a very good chance of winning.

However, the 25-year-old has missed four cuts in five majors outside of The Masters, including at The Open Championship at Royal Troon last year.

Aberg was one of several big names to not make the weekend in South Ayrshire 12 months ago. He was nine over par for his two rounds.

Obviously, this has been another mixed year for Aberg. He won the Genesis Invitational and could have easily found himself in the playoff at Augusta National. However, his form has dropped off in the months since.

A top 10 at the Genesis Scottish Open last week looked to be a step in the right direction. And speaking to Sky Sports, Aberg explained what he took from his Open debut last year as he prepares for another go on the links.

“I think I underestimated the power of mother nature. I think I was walking into the tournament thinking it was going to be a nice time, but it was hard. It was blowing a lot. I just remember a lot of those crosswind holes on the front nine being quite brutal. But I have a little more of an accepting approach this week I guess, because it’s probably going to be a factor and we’ll try and deal with it the best we can,” he said.

Ludvig Aberg’s PGA Tour statistics this year

It is surprising that in a year in which Aberg won a signature event on the PGA Tour, he seems to have been brought back down to earth. Clearly, he has work to do to realise his enormous potential.

Obviously, he has so much time on his side. And there is no question at all about the talent he has. But perhaps it is not going to come as easy for Aberg as many thought.

Some of his strokes gained numbers this year are quite alarming, particularly ahead of taking on Royal Portrush.

Having said that, it would be no surprise at all if Aberg was one of those who found himself in the mix to win in the coming days.
