The 2025 Ryder Cup has only just concluded, but many eyes are already turning to the 2027 edition at Adare Manor.

And much of the early Ryder Cup focus is concentrated on who will captain Europe and the USA in Ireland.

Keegan Bradley could remain as Ryder Cup captain despite the USA’s defeat to Europe at Bethpage Black, for which the American received heavy criticism.

And Donald has seemingly yet to decide on his future in the competition, having led his side to back-to-back victories.

Europe were also successful under the guidance of the Englishman in Rome in 2023, where Zach Johnson was the USA captain.

Whether Donald returns for a third successive stint remains to be seen, with one LIV Golf player now somewhat controversially throwing his hat into the ring.

Speaking to Bunkered, 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell said of the role: “It’s on my mind, but being honest with you, I don’t know what to do about it.

“I don’t know whether it should be on my mind at all, as in if it’s something that’s not possible politically. If that’s the case, clearly I’ll be disappointed, but I’ll obviously understand why.

“The world is where it is. People will say I’ll get what I deserve, which, you know, I’m not really sure I totally agree with that, right?

“People will say I don’t deserve it and I’m responsible for a lot of what’s happened. But I’m a very, very small cog in this big wheel.

“The divisiveness has come from the best players in the world. It hasn’t come from the 40-somethings like myself that are just trying to eke out a living and staying competitive on an opportunity that was presented to us, which would have been crazy to say no to from a business point of view.

“I don’t know if it’s something that’s going to be unachievable. I’m not sure if it’s something that’s potentially on the radar.

“I only saw a couple of comments where Luke said maybe he doesn’t want to do it a third time. Justin Rose doesn’t want it because he wants to play. Rory [McIlroy] is obviously not even close, right? He doesn’t want to be playing captain.

“So it’s kind of like, ‘who’s it going to be?’ And why couldn’t it be me? I would love to be the olive branch that potentially puts some of this back together again.”

What are the chances of a LIV Golf Ryder Cup captain?

Paul McGinley thinks a LIV Golf Ryder Cup captain would be complicated, although there was plenty of representation from the Saudi-backed tour at Bethpage Black.

Bryson DeChambeau represented the USA, while his fellow LIV Golf players Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton played for Europe.

But the Ryder Cup captaincy is arguably another matter entirely, with LIV’s current tussle with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour complicating matters.

McDowell does, however, arguably find himself among the potential candidates for the European captaincy alongside the likes of Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia.

That entire group of European Ryder Cup icons from years gone by are currently plying their trade on LIV Golf.

McDowell has made four appearances in the prestigious competition, earning Europe nine points with his record of 8-5-2.
