History is going to be made at this year’s Ryder Cup with Tyrrell Hatton ensuring that there is going to be at least one LIV Golf player on the European team for the first time.
Of course, you would imagine that Jon Rahm will almost certainly join Tyrrell Hatton on Luke Donald‘s team for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage. The pair are appealing the fines which they have received from the DP World Tour since joining LIV Golf.
The formation of LIV Golf definitely seemed to have a much bigger impact on the landscape of European golf. The likes of Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter seemingly took themselves out of contention to captain Europe in the Ryder Cup with their moves to LIV. Henrik Stenson was stripped of the captaincy for the 2023 event after deciding to follow them.
Sergio Garcia was hoping to force his way back into the team this year. Unfortunately, the Spaniard’s form has been underwhelming for much of the season.
LIV Golf player says he’s desperate to be in the fold at the Ryder Cup
But it seems that another European on LIV is absolutely desperate to be involved in one way or another.
Graeme McDowell was a talisman for Europe in 2010 – and sealed the decisive point at Celtic Manor – while he also played a starring role in 2014. He also served as a vice-captain in 2018 and 2021.

And speaking to BBC Sport, he insisted that he would love to have the chance to try and help the team in September.
“I’d love to be there. Jon Rahm asked me earlier this year if I was asked to be vice-captain at Bethpage Black, would I accept it? I said if they asked me to come and make coffees for you, I’d go and make coffees for you. That’s how much I want to be there in a supporting role for Team Europe,” he said.
“It goes without saying as we look to Adare Manor in two years’ time, I would do anything to be in that European team room, to feel part of that team, to put that European shirt on one more time, to cheer the guys on and help Europe win another Ryder Cup.”
Why Graeme McDowell’s Ryder Cup comments are unlikely to attract much sympathy
It is so fascinating whenever someone on LIV Golf speaks about how much the Ryder Cup means to them.
Obviously, this writer has absolutely no right to criticise the contributions made by the likes of Garcia, Poulter, Westwood, Stenson and McDowell.
| Ryder Cup | Points won | Overall record |
| 2008 | 2.5 | 2-1-1 |
| 2010 | 2.5 | 2-1-1 |
| 2012 | 1 | 1-3-0 |
| 2014 | 3 | 3-0-0 |
| Total | 9 | 8-5-2 |
However, they made the jump to LIV knowing full well what the consequences were likely to be.
The DP World Tour has not covered themselves in glory either. They have seemingly made a big effort to ensure that Rahm and Hatton will be eligible to play this year, having basically shut the door on others.
But McDowell has not played on the DP World Tour since 2022, so it does not feel as though he is doing much to help his chances of being called into the fold by Donald.
