The PGA Tour certainly appear to have ruffled some feathers after releasing a trailer for The Players Championship in March.

The Players Championship is clearly a significant week in the golfing calendar, with many players seemingly stepping up their preparations for The Masters in April.

What do you make of Brandel Chamblee’s comments on The Players Championship?

Chamblee raised some eyebrows with his comments on The Players…

“In every single way that a metric could be used to measure whether something is a major, the Players, to me, stands alone and above all the other four major championships as not just a major. It is in my estimation, the best major.“

It is an event that always attracts an amazing field. And it has delivered plenty of exciting finishes over the years, including in 2025 when Rory McIlroy defeated J.J. Spaun in a playoff.

But some obviously think that the PGA Tour have gone too far in their efforts to build up next month’s event at TPC Sawgrass.

Lee Westwood questions the PGA Tour over their Players Championship trailer

The PGA Tour released a trailer that ended with the tagline: ‘March is going to be major’. It is an attempt to put the flagship event on the PGA Tour on a par with the four biggest tournaments of the season.

Brandel Chamblee put The Players Championship above the four majors in some bizarre comments this week.

But few seem to agree with Chamblee. Phil Mickelson dismissed Chamblee’s comments, while Lee Westwood has taken to social media to suggest that the PGA Tour’s push to put The Players on a pedestal is a sign of their overall concern.

What the PGA Tour appear to really be doing with contentious Players Championship video

Westwood has been incredibly active on social media of late, with the former world number one being a staunch defender of LIV Golf.

He definitely makes some good points along the way. However, it is a strange take to hint that the PGA Tour feels threatened.

Which LIV Golf player do you think will make the biggest jump in the world rankings in 2026?

Brian Rolapp and the Future Competitions Committee are in the process of shaping the tour to maximise its potential.

It would be incredibly odd if they did not try and make The Players Championship feel as important as possible, particularly as they do not own the major championships.

Outside of the majors and the Ryder Cup, there probably is no event on any tour that is as prestigious as the one held at TPC Sawgrass every year.

But it does not appear that you would get Westwood to admit that right now.
