There is absolutely no question that Lee Westwood has to come up in the conversation when debating who the greatest player of all-time without a major title is.

Lee Westwood has had an unbelievable career, with the 51-year-old winning 44 times worldwide, including 25 times on the European Tour, most of which came at a time when the tour was thriving.

No European has played on more Ryder Cups, with the Englishman winning seven times in 11 appearances. Meanwhile, he has finished inside the top three at all four majors during his career. And he continues to give a decent account of himself on LIV, with Westwood 34th on the individual standings this season.

But when asked on Fairway to Heaven to pick out his proudest achievement from his golf career, Westwood opted for an accolade he achieved in 2010 as the standout.

Lee Westwood picks proudest career moment

“I think it would have to be getting to world number one. At any time, if you can say you’re the best player in the world and I was lucky enough to be able to do it for nearly half a year, it’s an incredible achievement,” he said.

“Everybody’s trying to get to that position, not many people do, and I took the number one spot off Tiger as well, gives it a little bit of added spice.”

An all-time great

It is a shame that Westwood is likely to end his career without a major title, having not played in one of the sport’s four biggest events since 2022. Between 2008 and 2013, he finished in the top 10 in the majors on 11 occasions.

But you do get the sense that Westwood is at peace with where his career is at, with those on LIV showing little sign of regretting their decision to make the move. Perhaps some felt that the situation surrounding world ranking points would be resolved by now, but clearly, they must have been aware that there was a chance that the rift would continue for the remainder of their careers.

Certainly, fans of the European Ryder Cup team will remember Westwood amongst the all-time greats, but he will feel that he has plenty left in the tank before he calls it a day.
