Sahith Theegala is one of the unknown quantities heading into this year’s Presidents Cup, with the 26-year-old one of four rookies on Jim Furyk’s team heading to Royal Montreal.

Sahith Theegala was the final player to automatically qualify for the Presidents Cup team after an impressive season which would culminate in the youngster finishing third at The Tour Championship.

Of course, what happens at East Lake can be largely influenced by the staggered starting scores. Had everyone started at level par and shot the same scores, Theegala would have finished ahead of Scottie Scheffler. And had he not grounded his club in the bunker during the third round, he would have won the entire event. Theegala was the one to call the penalty on himself, insisting that he was almost certain that he had grazed the sand on his backswing.

Plenty of fans will be excited to see how he fares in the upcoming Presidents Cup, in what is surely going to be the first of many appearances in team competitions for his country.

Why Sahith Theegala could be one to watch at the Presidents Cup

And speaking on The First Cut Podcast, Kyle Porter suggested why Theegala could potentially be one of the players to steal the show in Canada.

“I think Sahith, what’s interesting about him I think he’s the kind of guy that you’re going to see some electricity. I think he’s actually great for matchplay because he’ll have some doubles and triples, but then he’ll have like five birdies in a row, and in matchplay, that’s great,” he said.

An important player in USA’s future

Keegan Bradley will definitely be hoping to see Theegala thrive at Royal Montreal. Theegala is the youngest player on the American side, and one of only four players under the age of 30.

It is not an ageing American side by any means, with Bradley and Brian Harman the only players over the age of 35. However, it is important that they have one eye on the future, with the end goal perhaps being the 2027 Ryder Cup in Europe. Of course, they are still seeking their first win on the continent since 1993.

Theegala will be 29 by that time and potentially at the peak of his powers, so he could potentially be a leader of the side. So many will be hoping to see some positive signs when the Presidents Cup gets going.
