For those golf fans who are not particularly fond of LIV Golf, you would be forgiven for thinking that Jon Rahm has had an underwhelming year since making the surprise decision to jump from the PGA Tour.
Jon Rahm‘s move to LIV Golf was arguably the most shocking defection there has been since the breakaway tour got up and running. At the time, he was the current Masters champion, and he had played a starring role in Europe’s emphatic win at the Ryder Cup. Rahm had also previously spoken about having little desire to move away from the PGA Tour.
There looked to be real potential for Rahm to be the needle-mover in 2024 that would give LIV huge leverage in deciding golf’s future, provided that he also impressed in the majors.
Rahm has arguably had an almost dream start to his LIV career, with the Spaniard leading the individual standings. He would have surely hoped to have won more individually – with his only victory coming at JCB – but he has not finished outside the top 10 all year. His Legion XIII side are also second in the team standings.
What people don’t understand about Jon Rahm
Rahm’s performances in the majors however, have been poor, with the clear high point being a top 10 finish at The Open Championship. His Masters defence proved to be a damp squib, while he missed the cut at the PGA Championship.
Some have suggested that LIV’s format has hurt Rahm in the majors. But speaking on Fried Egg Golf, golf writer Kyle Porter insisted that he remains convinced that the 29-year-old is a superstar in the current game.
“The other one this year that was interesting to me was Rahm. People have weird opinions on Rahm, I think he is generationally good, I was looking at Data Golf today and in terms of strokes gained since he turned pro, it’s him and Rory, and that’s it. It’s those two,” he said.

“I think people who are like, ‘I hate LIV’, all these stuff, look at Rahm and they’re like, ‘he’s no good’. And you’re like, you don’t understand how good, he is unbelievable.”
A point to prove in 2025
Rahm’s achievement should not be downplayed. While he has been completely overshadowed by what Scottie Scheffler has done on the PGA Tour, his consistency has been hugely impressive.
There are genuine criticisms to be made about the depth in LIV fields, but Rahm has finished in the top three on five occasions. When the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Smith and Sergio Garcia are also on the tour, that is an impressive record from Rahm.
He definitely goes into 2025 with a real point to prove in the major championships, whether he cares about the criticism and doubters or not, but Porter is clearly confident that Rahm has the game to silence his critics emphatically.
