Day one of the Walker Cup is in the books and both Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson took their social media accounts in reaction to the golf on display.

After day one at Cypress Point, the US Walker Cup team leads Great Britain & Ireland by a score of 6.5-5.5.

Mickelson played on two Walker Cup teams, in 1989 and 1991, while Bradley never received the honour of representing his country at amateur level.

The 39-year-old from Vermont is, of course, the US Ryder Cup captain this year.

Bradley has been praised for not picking himself for the Ryder Cup team, with many golf fans and journalists alike applauding his selflessness and strong leadership.

Mickelson was one of the players who lauded Bradley for his ‘classy’ decision to leave himself off the team.

The two Americans formed a fearsome partnership at the 2012 Ryder Cup, winning all three of the matches they played together at Medinah.

Representing the United States meant an awful lot to both players.

Now, both Bradley and Mickelson have offered words of encouragement for the American amateur starlets who are taking on their British and Irish counterparts on the Monterrey Peninsula.

And they had plenty of backing from some of the biggest names in the game on social media as well.

Bradley took to his X account in reaction to the US turning things around in the Saturday singles to take a one-point lead into Sunday’s matches.

The Ryder Cup captain said: What a great session for the fellas !! Let’s get it tomorrow.

While Mickelson reacted on X as well.

He said: The Walker Cup is so fun to watch. Team USA played great to take a 1 point lead into tomorrow’s final round. It’ll be an exciting finish and so cool of Cypress Point to host this special event.

Cypress Point is indeed a special, special venue. It’s right at the top of most golfers’ bucket lists.

And every single Walker Cup player participating in the event this year must consider themselves incredibly lucky to be playing around the historic Dr. Alister MacKenzie design.

United States have dominated Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup

Since the very first Walker Cup in 1922, the United States have won 40 of the 49 match-ups.

Aside from a brief spell from the mid-90s when Great Britain & Ireland won four out of five Walker Cups, the Americans have been head and shoulders above their rivals.

Here are the results from the last 20 years:

This year’s edition of the Walker Cup at Cypress Point could go either way, with just one point separating the two teams with four foursomes matches and 10 singles matches to be played.

It should be a fantastic day of golf at Cypress Point, with all 20 players giving it their all at one of the game’s most prestigious venues.

Bring it on!
