Justin Thomas has been looking ahead to September’s Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club despite only just making the season-ending Tour Championship field.
The American secured the last spot in the FedEx Cup top 30 to give himself a shot at winning golf’s most lucrative prize for the second time at East Lake.
Thomas, however, is outside the six automatic qualifications for the Presidents Cup and will be reliant on Jim Furyk selecting him in one of his six captain’s picks.
The two-time major winner, however, has now shared whether he’s overly bothered about making the team.
Justin Thomas wants to be part of Jim Furyk’s Presidents Cup team

When asked before the Tour Championship whether he was ‘auditioning’ for Furyk’s team, Thomas offered a balanced response.
“A little bit. I guess I would answer that I don’t feel like I am for me, but if I was him, I would say I am, if that makes sense,” Thomas explained. “With how many people have an opportunity, I think it would be — he’s definitely looking at guys that are potential picks and how they’re playing.”
He added: “But most importantly, I am here, and I know that some guys aren’t. But then again, I was in that spot last year where there was guys that were trying to get picked and I wasn’t even in the Playoffs.
“I think I talked about it maybe last week or Memphis. I’m definitely more at ease now than I was last year about getting picked, and it’s not from a lack of wanting to be on the team or feel like it’s not as important. My priorities are in a better place, and if I play golf, I know I should; it’ll take care of itself.”
Thomas concluded by suggesting he would still like to be part of the team despite his recent change of attitude. “Yeah, I obviously really, really want to be on that team, and I know there’s a lot of people that have a chance,” Thomas added. “It would be nice to play well for a lot of reasons this week, but that would definitely be one.”
Justin Thomas’ match-play record could be deciding factor in Presidents Cup pick
Despite struggling during the 2024 season, Thomas has won 12 matches in Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups previously and would be an excellent pick for Furyk, particularly in the fourball and foursomes.
Furthermore, Thomas has claimed two singles wins, coming over Tyrrell Hatton and Rory McIlroy.
Of course, his low ranking will see doubters emerge, but the odd piece of experience is crucial in golf’s team events. Luke Donald used this to his advantage when picking Justin Rose for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, a decision that worked wonders.
For the aforementioned reasons, it would not be surprising to see Thomas included in Furyk’s plans for the event at Royal Montreal in September.
