Justin Thomas has yet to win The Masters but he very much knows the course like the back of his hand and back in 2020, he claimed Augusta was actually really easy for one golfer.
Thomas has struggled at times and in the last two years, he’s not made the cut.
Indeed, Thomas’ best finish around the famous course came in 2020, when he managed to finish a veery respectable fourth as Dustin Johnson won out.
However, it was also during that successful 2020 run that Thomas noticed that the Augusta course was set up to very much favour one player in particular.

Why Justin Thomas believes Augusta National is perfect for Bryson DeChambeau
Speaking back in 2020 after seeing DeChambeau hit it so far, Justin Thomas admitted that in general, Augusta National should be a course that is much easier for Bryson than everyone else.
“It is a substantially easier golf course for him than it is for everybody else. To me he is not hitting it any further than he was the last time I played with him. I think when he starts messing with the longer driver and has more free time, as crazy as it is, he might be able to hit it further,” Thomas said at the time.
“But there are a lot of holes – in fact pretty much every hole – he is going to have a pretty distinct advantage over everybody. You look at a hole like two and he has a 90 yard wide fairway, pretty much, and he could be flipping anything from a nine to a seven iron in there.
“He obviously still has to execute the shots and make the putts, but I sure would like to be hitting from his tee shots as opposed to mine distance wise.
“It’s very impressive what he has done. I still think the fact that he hits it as straight as he does and as far as he does is extremely impressive and he has definitely got a lot of players to change their mentality or at least try and pick up some yardage.
“But I think I have said before I don’t exactly have 240lbs in the bag for weight, I don’t have the height for that, but it’s impressive and it’s a very gettable golf course for him.”
As we know, DeChambeau has also not won at Augusta and he’ll be desperate to get his first green jacket in the 2025 edition.
Bryson DeChambeau’s Masters record after claiming it was a par 67
Bryson DeChambeau is never short of letting his feelings on matters be known and as a more brash, young golfer back in 2020, he admitted he felt the course was more a par 67, not a 72.
“I’m looking at it as a par 67 for me because I can reach all the par fives in two, no problem. If the conditions stay the way they are, that’s what I feel like par is for me,” DeChambeau said at the time.
“There is definitely a possibility I don’t play well, and I could shoot whatever everyday and shoot a lot over par relative to my par and still play decent.”
However, his record around Augusta hardly shows someone who is dominating the course regularly.

| 2020 | T34 |

Just like the US Open in 2024, we are going to see a McIlroy and DeChambeau head to head and for the golfing fans, it’s the ideal scenario.
It goes without saying, then, that DeChambeau needs to pull something out of the bag to back up his claims from five years ago.
