Justin Thomas has revealed what felt different during the final round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla.

Two-time major winner Thomas carded a three-under-par 68 to finish on 13 under, eight shots adrift of eventual winner Xander Schauffele.

His T8 finish is the latest impressive outing from Thomas as he looks to turn around his slow start to 2024.

And, the 2022 PGA Championship winner can have few complaints about how he performed at his hometown course.

Thomas, clearly, would have loved to have lifted the Wanamaker Trophy in his home state.

The American was vehemently supported throughout the week and has admitted he perhaps tried a little too hard to make things happen during his final round.

He explained: “I played well enough all week; I just couldn’t make the putts I needed to get the momentum. I mis judged a lie on seven, I think getting birdie on that and birdying eight or nine, turning in at three under is way different than one under.

“I understood I needed to shoot really low today. If I shot eight or nine under, I had a chance, it looks like that wouldn’t have been the case, but it was more wanting to be there.”

Thomas also revealed that he felt nervous for the first time on Sunday

“I was nervous today; it was the first time I had felt that this week,” he explained. “I think I just pressed a little too much and wanted it a little too bad, but it’s one of those things, and it’s tough to win. It really is.”

Something to build on for Justin Thomas ahead of Pinehurst No.2

Since missing the cut at The Masters, Thomas’ form has improved. The 30-year-old hasn’t finished outside the top 25 in three stacked events: RBC Heritage, the Wells Fargo Championship, and the PGA Championship.

He appears to be playing his way into form at the right time; the issue for Thomas is that he’s not the only player peaking at the moment.

The PGA Championship final leaderboard was stacked with some of the world’s best, who will all fancy their chances heading to Pinehurst next month.

Typically a tough test, the North Carolina course could be the scene for an all-time classic U.S. Open as Wyndham Clark looks to defend his 2023 title.
