Two of the most surprising decisions Jim Furyk made with his captain’s picks ahead of the Presidents Cup centred around Max Homa and Justin Thomas, with Homa making the team while Thomas was arguably the biggest name left out off the team ahead of Royal Montreal.
The teams for the Presidents Cup are now set, with Jim Furyk and Mike Weir rounding off their teams with six captain’s picks as America look to continue their dominance of the event.
Weir made a ‘shocking’ call in leaving out Nick Taylor, but Furyk seemed to a cause a stir himself by selecting the next six names on the qualification standings. Sam Burns, Tony Finau and Russell Henley were hardly surprising inclusions, but there was some controversy elsewhere.

Some were baffled to see Keegan Bradley make the team, while neither Max Homa or Brian Harman qualified for The Tour Championship after enduring tougher seasons.
Justin Thomas sends message to Max Homa after Presidents Cup decision
Meanwhile, Justin Thomas staked a strong claim during the second-half of the season, perhaps starting from the opening round of the Scottish Open. And some felt that a good performance at The Tour Championship would see Furyk pick Thomas.
However, it would be Homa who would be given a surprise spot – and Thomas has now responded to the 33-year-old on Instagram as Homa looked forward to Royal Montreal…

The US’s biggest supporter
It is no surprise to see Thomas take a classy stance on Homa’s selection. Furyk spoke of Thomas taking his decision incredibly graciously, and he will understand that he had little right to expect a pick.
Homa meanwhile, has not been playing well for some time, but he has an outstanding record in team competition. He took four points from the 2022 Presidents Cup, while Rory McIlroy was the only player on either side to win more points than him at last year’s Ryder Cup.
Thomas was on the other side when he received a contentious captain’s pick for Rome, so he will have been prepared for missing out – and it seems that few will be showing more support for the US team later this month than the two-time major champion.
