Whatever happens at the upcoming Presidents Cup, there is no question that the US team will have their sights set on banishing some painful memories when they tee it up in 2026.

Jim Furyk’s US side is likely to be overwhelming favourites at the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal, with the Internationals only winning once in the event’s history. Mike Weir will be desperate to lead his side to victory on home soil.

The 2026 Presidents Cup meanwhile, is set to be held at Medinah in Illinois. Of course, Medinah is not a course which carries happy memories for Team USA.

The course hosted the 2012 Ryder Cup, and for some time, it appeared that the Americans were well on their way to securing a huge win that week. Davis Love III’s men led 10-4 at one stage on Saturday evening and needed just 4.5 points from the remaining 14 matches to regain the Samuel Ryder Trophy.

Everyone knows what happened next.

Justin Thomas issues verdict on Medinah changes

Obviously, there is a very good chance that none of those who were involved in 2012 will be playing in the 2026 Presidents Cup – though, interestingly, Keegan Bradley did make his Ryder Cup debut 12 years ago. But the American team that week two years from now will be well aware of what one of the main talking points will be upon their arrival at Medinah.

Justin Thomas will not be involved at Montreal after missing out on a captain’s pick. But he has had a look at the competition’s next course, with the two-time major champion commenting on Instagram on the changes which have been made to the layout…

A man on a mission

It would be no surprise to see Thomas play like a man on a mission over the next two years after missing out on receiving a captain’s pick from Furyk. Thomas took Furyk’s decision well, but he will have been extremely disappointed to not be involved having been such a stalwart over the best part of a decade.

Thomas will have known that he could hardly expect a pick after a mixed year, but he is one player with the game to bounce back from this setback.

Certainly, it would not be a surprise if Thomas was one of those teeing it up at Medinah in two years.
