Despite a nightmare Friday for Jim Furyk’s men, the USA produced a superb performance to comfortably retain the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal.
USA managed to put one hand on the trophy with their display on Saturday, as they won both sessions 3-1 to move to within four points of retaining the Presidents Cup. It was a particularly significant day considering that the Internationals had won 5-0 on Friday.
The likes of Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler had stepped up in the big moments. Meanwhile, Collin Morikawa had been labelled the US’s standout player across the first three days.
But heading into the Sunday singles, just one member of Jim Furyk‘s team remained unbeaten after the first three days.
Justin Rose lauds USA star’s short game
Sam Burns sat out the Friday matches in which the Internationals produced a clean sweep. He won alongside Cantlay on two occasions, while he also came out on top when he and Morikawa faced Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes.
Some have suggested Burns’ performance this week has gone under the radar, but plenty will have been impressed by how he has putted at Royal Montreal. But there is another part of his game which has really impressed Justin Rose.

Speaking on Sky Sports (broadcast on 29/9; 17:36) after Burns had spun the ball off the green on the second hole, Rose suggested that he is amazed by what he can do with his wedges.
“Sam is one of the players that I’ll walk by when he’s on the pitching green and watch him. When he’s hitting 30, 40 yarders, he can put the most ridiculous amount of spin on it from ranges that you wouldn’t expect,” he said.
“He’s so wide with the arc at the bottom, I don’t know what he does, but tons of spin, tons of width.”
A massive contribution from Sam Burns
Burns went into the week with an underwhelming record from his debuts in the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup. Of course, he has often been paired with good friend Scottie Scheffler. And with that, you would potentially look at his record from Quail Hollow and assume that Burns had let Scheffler down.
However, it was Scheffler who really struggled in Charlotte, with Burns playing well. So many will feel that he is getting more of the credit that he deserves after this year’s event.
Not only was Burns making a number of putts, but he was also making them at crucial times. And his record now looks a lot better after a near-flawless week this time around.
