Jordan Spieth goes into the Players Championship with something of a point to prove.

Jordan Spieth‘s fortunes have been one of the main talking points on the PGA Tour over the last few months. There was plenty of intrigue heading into the year after he brought a premature end to his 2024 season following wrist surgery.

And the full Jordan Spieth experience has been on show. He was in contention at the WM Phoenix Open and played well at the Cognizant Classic. Meanwhile, he had tough weeks at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational.

So many fans will be fascinated to see how he fares at TPC Sawgrass this week, with the Players Championship the flagship event on the PGA Tour.

Spieth does not have a good record at the event. His only top 10 came in his first appearance in the tournament back in 2014.

And speaking to Johnson Wagner on Golf Channel, Spieth explained what changes he is looking to make this time around.

“I think for the most part, I should approach it like a major, and what I mean by that is more of the approach to the green where you stay real patient, stay real patient, stay real patient, just take advantage of the par fives, take advantage of when you get a good number on a couple of holes,” he said.

“I think I’ve gotten a little bit impatient here over the years, and I take a couple of chances I shouldn’t take and then it bites you. Pete Dye, he tends to do that. There’s kind of two hole locations on each hole and two that you kind of want to stay away from. So I think in general, it’s being a little bit more patient.

“It’s a little bit harder to do in large because the scoring gets a little bit lower than it was in May, but it still stands you just may get away with something in the rough where you stop it on the green a little quicker or something.”

Spieth has missed the cut in six of his 10 completed events at Sawgrass over the years.

He did finish just inside the top 20 back in 2023, posting a round of 66 on Saturday. But it seems safe to assume that we are going to need to see the best of Spieth this week if he is going to contend.

Interestingly, he is performing at a decent level in each strokes gained category right now. He is inside the top 100 in every metric – though not inside the top 50 either.

TPC Sawgrass probably allows for one part of the game to be off before it really costs a player. But the course barely gives away anything more than that.
