Jon Rahm ‘surprised’ after hearing stat about other Spanish golfers at The Open Championship

Jon Rahm produced an impressive performance at last week’s Open Championship, finishing on one under after carding a final-round 68.

The Spaniard was left to rue his first and third rounds, which ultimately cost him the chance to land his third major title.

Speaking after The Open, Rahm suggested he failed to take advantage of Royal Troon’s par fives, an issue which ultimately cost him.

Now, after taking time to breathe after the final major of the year, Rahm has taken time to dissect The Open as a whole.

Speaking to Golf Digest ahead of LIV Golf’s event at JCB Golf and Country Club, Rahm revealed that there’s a strong desire from Spain for him to win the Claret Jug.

“I want to win the Open, and a lot of Spanish people want to see me win it because no [Spaniard] since Seve has been able to do it,” he said.

Furthermore, the 29-year-old couldn’t believe no Spanish player has been named Champion Golfer since 1988.

“That’s surprising given how good some our Spanish players have been,” Rahm added.

“Both Ollie [Jose Maria Olazabal] and Sergio [Garcia] have had success on links golf courses outside the Open; Ollie won the Irish Open on a links course [1990 at Portmarnock in Dublin], and Sergio won the Boys Amateur Championship and has two career runner-up results at the Open Championship].”

Rahm’s game is well-suited to links golf, and his Open Championship record is a testament to that. However, Eddie Pepperell believes Rahm’s decision to move to LIV has impacted his major ambitions.

The Spaniard has made seven out of eight cuts and finished in the top ten three times, including one second and third-place finish.

Rahm came T2 at Royal Liverpool in 2023 and T3 at Royal St. George’s the year prior. Furthermore, the two-time major winner finished 11th at Portrush in 2019, which is the scene of the 2025 edition.

Given his form and pedigree in blustery conditions, Rahm will be targeting the 153rd Open as his best chance of major number three.
