Jon Rahm has provided an idea of where he believes the winning score will be after his impressive round on Friday kept him in contention at The Open Championship.

Jon Rahm is in a tie for 13th after the second round of The Open Championship at Royal Troon, with the Spaniard making three birdies in his one under par round. Back to back birdies on 14 and 15 provided a hint that Rahm may be ready to make a real charge on the weekend.

He is one of the players with a lot of work to do. Shane Lowry capitalised on the calmer conditions during his second round to reach seven under par as he looks to win his second major championship – five years after his triumph at Royal Portrush.

The round of the day in South Ayrshire was three under par while the cut line saw those on six over par get through to the weekend. So it has certainly been incredibly difficult to score well this week.

Jon Rahm drops hint at winning score at The Open

Nevertheless, in comments reported by BBC Sport, Rahm claimed that Lowry is still a little way away from reaching the finishing line.

“I can’t tell you because the golf course is firming up, so if we get two more days of wind, you never know. No lead is safe. I still think obviously you need to get to double digits. In my case I’ll get as low as I can. But we’ll see,” he said, when asked about the winning score.

“If you have to make up shots, you almost want difficult weather where if you can post a one, two, three maybe three under par round, you can make up more shots than in a regular event.”

Too much quality waiting in the wings

The likes of Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa and Brooks Koepka are probably going to need Lowry to do them a favour over the next two rounds if they are going to stand a real chance of winning the Claret Jug.

Lowry spoke of Scottie Scheffler not being worried about the margin between them, and Rahm is only two shots further back of the world number one, so there are clearly plenty of twists still to come over the next 48 hours.

There are plenty of outstanding players around Rahm on the leaderboard, so it would be a shock if one of them did not produce a stunning round to put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Rahm is clearly hoping that he is the man to set the course alight over the weekend.
