Golf fans have been given a real treat to look forward to in December, with the recent news that Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are set to face Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau in an exhibition match.

Of course, there are several exciting subplots to the event, with the obvious one between the fact that two PGA Tour stars are set to face off against two of LIV Golf‘s major champions. But there is also the prospect of seeing Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau duel again after their incredible final round at the US Open earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the one caveat which comes with Scottie Scheffler‘s incredible year is the undeniable fact that some of the world’s best players are now playing on LIV. So it would be good to see how he fares in a match with DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.

It has, understandably, prompted some fans to wonder what other matches could take place in the future, particularly while golf remains divided. And there is arguably no bigger name on LIV than Jon Rahm, with the Spaniard leading the individual standings this season.

Jon Rahm reveals whether he would want to play in future PGA Tour vs LIV Golf match

Rahm’s exit last year was a massive blow to the PGA Tour. But he has suggested in his press conference ahead of LIV Golf Chicago that he would definitely be open to featuring in future matchups.

“Ever since I joined, and I believe before, I felt like we should do what we can to – we have an opportunity to create a new stage for golf in the world of sports that could be better than what we had before, and I feel like we should take advantage of this situation. Yeah, if there’s anything that we could do, that needs to be done, and I’d be happy to do it. Had I been asked to go play in that match, I don’t know the date, but I would have tried to do it because at that time I will be going to Spain, so December can be tricky, but I would have tried to make it and be a part of it. If there’s ever anything like that in the future, yeah, I wouldn’t mind,” he said.

“I think we could do some special things having both tours, with the League and the Tour, and what I keep saying is an even better product for the spectators to watch and something very, very special.

“Now, you do need the smarter people behind closed doors to decide what that looks like. I don’t know what the loss is. I don’t know what could be possible or could not be possible. But I think if they put their minds together, they can come up with something very special, and that’s been my thought all along.”

The matchup golf fans have been denied in 2024

When Rahm and Scheffler halved their match in the singles at last year’s Ryder Cup, it appeared to be a moment which would whet the appetite for 2024 on the PGA Tour, with the two – who have won the last three Masters titles between them – likely to be the two biggest heavyweights on tour.

However, Rahm’s defection denied fans that chance to see that particular battle. And unfortunately, the 29-year-old really did not have a good year in the major championships.

Should Rahm go on and clinch the individual title on LIV, it would be fantastic to see him face Scheffler following the year he has had on the PGA Tour. There is no question that he has had one of the all-time great seasons, with eight wins worldwide.

It appears that that match is not on the cards right now, but with Scheffler signed up for December and Rahm keen for the future, perhaps fans can hold out hope of the pair being involved in another event.
