While Jon Rahm has had a very poor year in the major championships, it cannot be denied that the Spaniard has had an outstanding first season on LIV Golf.
LIV Golf landing Jon Rahm at the end of 2023 appeared to be their biggest signing yet, with the 29-year-old the current Masters champion and also the world number three when he jumped ship from the PGA Tour. It was hard not to feel that the signing could have a huge impact on talks between PIF and the PGA Tour.
In fairness to Rahm, his move definitely did act as a reminder that this situation cannot continue forever. However, it has not exactly been the needle-mover many would have expected.
Rahm has not helped his cause by producing a very disappointing year in the majors. His top 10 at The Open Championship was his only finish inside the top 40 all year. Thankfully, he has had a lot more success on LIV, with the two-time major champion leading the individual standings.
Jon Rahm reveals what’s been said about his season which he thinks has been unfair
Rahm won the LIV Golf UK event, while he has not finished outside the top 10 all year. And it seems that he feels that that has been overlooked by many.
Speaking in his press conference ahead of LIV Golf Chicago, Rahm was asked whether winning the individual title may change how some perceive his performance throughout the season.
“I can’t get too concerned about what others think, to be fair. It’s hard to answer this question because I always say if I do get it done on Sunday, ask me then, because right now it’s all hypothetical. Obviously it would be a great accomplishment to come in in my first season and win it. It is the goal, but it’s not easy to do, especially with how great players like Joaco have played,” he said.
“Even just getting to this point, it’s been a good year. I think overall, what I felt like I’ve played and maybe what I’ve read on the media of how I’ve been playing hasn’t matched what I was feeling. I think I was playing better golf than I was given credit for.

“I think in the second half of the season from the U.S. Open on, I think how I’ve played and what’s been spoken of is matched, in the sense of my game has been at the same level people have been talking about.
“It’s a bit of two tales, but I’ve been comfortable. It hasn’t been my best year, but this summer has been really good to me, and hopefully I can keep it going towards the end of the season.”
Spaniard overshadowed by another LIV star this year
Rahm’s form and consistency on LIV has been superb, and, regardless of what you think of LIV, it would be unfair to completely dismiss that success he has had. However, he has potentially been outshone by another player in the league.
The player who has arguably come closest to moving the needle this year has been Bryson DeChambeau, with the Crushers GC captain winning the US Open, finishing second at the PGA Championship and inside the top 10 at The Masters.
DeChambeau seemed to be the most popular player in the game when he won at Pinehurst, and that would have inevitably prompted some to watch LIV a bit more frequently.
Rahm definitely has the talent to have a similar impact next year. But it would be naive of the two-time major champion to think that he was not going to be criticised for some of his showings this season, particularly after making such a contentious decision to join LIV.
