Jon Rahm has labelled what Scottie Scheffler did at the Olympic golf event a joke, as the world number one secured the gold medal for USA at Le Golf National.

Heading into the final day, Scottie Scheffler appeared to have a little too much to do if he was going to secure win number seven of the season, with the 28-year-old four shots back of Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm. Schauffele, of course, was the player to emerge from the pack to win The Open Championship just last month.

But Scheffler just seems to have a gear no-one in the current game quite has, with The Masters champion shooting a 62 on Sunday to win by one ahead of Tommy Fleetwood.

Scheffler is not the first player to tie the course record this week, with Nicolai Hojgaard bringing himself back into contention on Saturday with his 62. Fleetwood was shocked by Hojgaard’s round, and it seems that Rahm had some similar feelings about what Scheffler did on Sunday.

Jon Rahm stunned by Scottie Scheffler at the Olympics

The Spaniard was asked in his press conference whether he was at all surprised by what Scheffler achieved.

“Yeah, I mean, 9-under is a joke of a round out here. To see two of them this week is pretty impressive,” he said.

“Not surprising at this point that Scottie is doing any of that. Yeah, at one point, there’s a couple of us. Rory was at 17. There’s a bunch of people at 17. Everybody was going low. With the wind conditions we had, it was very blowy, you can do it. But the second you miss a golf shot, this golf course is going to make you pay the price.”

Amazed but not surprised

Rahm’s response probably perfectly sums up what it is like to watch Scheffler in 2024. While you are not at all surprised to see him steal the show and come out on top, you are also left in awe at what he is capable of.

Some went into Olympics believing that Scheffler would trade years with Xander Schauffele after the latter won his second major title of the season at Royal Troon.

Schauffele winning his second Olympic gold medal would have certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons when it comes to the player of the year vote.

Admittedly, there is still the Tour Championship to come, but after Scheffler’s stunning performance in Paris, surely the debate over the player of the year has been put to bed.
