Jon Rahm is one of the players in the field this week at the US Open who knows what it takes to win the event, with the Spaniard lifting his first major title at Torrey Pines back in 2021.
Jon Rahm will surely be among the favourites in the coming days at Oakmont. He has continued his remarkable run of never finishing outside the top 10 in a LIV Golf event since making the jump from the PGA Tour.
Meanwhile, it was Rahm who gave Scottie Scheffler the most problems at the PGA Championship last month. The pair were tied for the lead at one stage on Sunday before the world number one managed to come through and win at Quail Hollow.
Unlike Scheffler however, Rahm has won the US Open. He was victorious four years ago, becoming the first player from Spain to ever win the event.
Jon Rahm predicts the likely winning score at the US Open at Oakmont
Of course, the US Open returns to Oakmont this week. It is the 10th time that the Pennsylvania course has hosted the event. No player has ever won a US Open at Oakmont with a score of better than five under par.
And speaking in his press conference ahead of Thursday’s opening round, Rahm suggested that he cannot see that changing this week.
“It’s gotten a lot better. I think my main issue is always with accepting the mistakes. I’m fully aware that I can make mistakes, but accepting that I’ve done it but it’s my fault and move on. A lot of times I’m very vocal about blaming something on the outside even though when I’m saying it, I’m fully aware it was my fault. So the quicker I accept that it’s me and I move on is going to help,” he said after being asked about dealing with setbacks on the course.

“There’s been weeks where I’ve performed really well on tough courses where that was the case. I think, as it relates to me, it’s that, just that acceptance that it’s going to happen and it happens and do what you need to do to hit the better shot next time.
“It’s just a tough course. It’s so difficult where very few times anybody has won under par. If it doesn’t rain, most likely over par will win again. It’s something that none of us, I would say, are used to, but it’s a challenge you need to embrace.
“If there’s any part of your game that will be tested on a week like this, it will be your mental game, that’s for sure.”
The winning scores in US Opens at Oakmont
Interestingly, just one of the past seven US Opens at Oakmont have seen the winner finish the week over par, with Angel Cabrera ending 2007 at five over par.
The most common winning score is five under par, with Ben Hogan, Johnny Miller and Ernie Els all reaching the total. Dustin Johnson was also on course to finish on the same number, but Johnson was handed a one-shot penalty when he won in 2016.
| Year | Winner | Winning Score |
| 1927 | Tommy Armour | +13 |
| 1935 | Sam Parks Jr. | +11 |
| 1953 | Ben Hogan | -5 |
| 1962 | Jack Nicklaus | -1 |
| 1973 | Johnny Miller | -5 |
| 1983 | Larry Nelson | -4 |
| 1994 | Ernie Els | -5 |
| 2007 | Angel Cabrera | +5 |
| 2016 | Dustin Johnson | -4 |
| 2025 | J.J. Spaun | -1 |
Rahm was the leading amateur back in 2016, as he finished at five over par. He finished two shots clear of a certain Scottie Scheffler that week.
It is hard to imagine that both men will end up over par this week, particularly if conditions are not too bad.
There seems to be a very good chance that either Rahm or Scheffler will emerge victorious.
