Sky Sports reporter Tim Barter has revealed what Jon Rahm was stunned to learn ahead of hosting this year’s Champions Dinner at The Masters.

Jon Rahm, of course, is the defending champion heading into this week’s Masters. The Spaniard won by four shots at Augusta National last year.

Obviously, given Rahm’s love for the history of the game, he would have surely loved almost everything about winning The Masters – particularly as he won his green jacket on Seve Ballesteros’ birthday.

But perhaps there is one tradition that he was not as happy with heading into this week.

Jon Rahm shocked to learn something about Champions Dinner

Of course, as champion, Rahm gets to set the menu for the Champions Dinner which took place earlier this week. And he opted for a number of dishes from Spain.

Given how special everything associated with Augusta National seems to be, you would not be surprised if the food was absolutely flawless. But it seems that the defending champion is not only responsible for deciding the menu.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Golf Podcast, Tim Barter suggested that Rahm got a bit of a shock when preparing for the event.

“I found out something a couple of years ago, and it was reiterated this week, so you just reminded me, you realise the champion has to pay for the Champions Dinner,” he said.

“Jon Rahm went to Augusta and said what’s my budget for the Champions Dinner? And they said anything you like because you’re paying for it. He went, ‘really?’ And they said you pay for the Champions Dinner, you’re inviting these fellow champions to come and celebrate your victory last year, and you will pay for whatever you provide.”

Spaniard now definitely has the ability to push the boat out

The good news is it is hard to imagine that Rahm felt the hit too much after paying for dinner for all of those previous champions who did attend.

Rahm was probably doing quite well for himself before opting to join LIV Golf at the start of the year. That move probably ensured that he never needs to look at his bank balance again!

In fairness, Rahm did not appear to do things on the cheap when selecting his menu. And he will hope that his reward from the golfing gods is another outstanding week on the course in Georgia.
