It feels strange at this stage to see Scottie Scheffler play in three events on the PGA Tour and not win any of them, with the world number one not going on that long a winless run in a year.

Scottie Scheffler was the player everyone was talking about heading into 2025. His performance at the Hero World Challenge appeared to be a real statement as he went on to win by six three months after his previous tournament appearance.

However, a hand injury sustained on Christmas Day ruled him out of The Sentry and The American Express. And with that, there were questions about how the 28-year-old would fare upon his return.

Some may be tempted to look at his results at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the WM Phoenix Open and the Genesis Invitational and wonder whether he is going to get anywhere near matching what he achieved in 2024.

Johnson Wagner has changed his mind on Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler has made some uncharacteristic mistakes along the way. But speaking on the Golf Channel Podcast, Johnson Wagner has claimed that he is almost more convinced that he is going to win in the near future after his third place finish at Torrey Pines.

“Zero concern. He showed today, I think he showed everyone today, the kind of competitor he is. He is going to have two weeks off leading into Bay Hill. He is going to go home. He may take tomorrow off but then he is going to work. He is going to grind and fix the things like the pull which the driver which was so prevalent the first couple of days,” he said.

“Even the pull with the irons on 11 and 16, that kind of erased his chances. But that shot he hit into 18 was ridiculous. I am picking him to win Bay Hill, I think he is going to have a chance to defend the Players for a third consecutive time. I am as bullish on Scottie as I could be. Leading into Pebble I was worried, but he has shown me enough in these three weeks that he is going to be just fine leading into the Players and the majors.”

Why Scheffler’s rivals will be particularly frightened by his performance at Torrey Pines after 2024

It is almost frightening to look at Scheffler’s performance at the Genesis and realise that he really was not that far away from winning the tournament.

Apart from his performance around the greens, the two-time Masters champion did not appear to be that impressive in any particular category across the week. And yet, he finished just three shots back of Ludvig Aberg.

It is easy to forget now, but Scheffler’s 2024 season actually started with him failing to win his first five tournaments on the PGA Tour.

Event number five was the Genesis Invitational as he then went on to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational. It is no surprise that Wagner is expecting history to repeat itself.
