It is little surprise that Joel Dahmen is looking to perform something of a deep dive into his game in the off-season after saving his PGA Tour card with an outstanding performance on Sunday at the RSM Classic last month.

Plenty of eyes were on Joel Dahmen at the RSM Classic, as he started the week 124th in the FedEx Cup standings. Remarkably, he came within one putt of missing the cut in Georgia – which would have put paid to his hopes of keeping his card.

However, Dahmen not only holed the putt on Friday, but he also made a 64 on Sunday to move up 26 places on the leaderboard and ensure that he remained 124th in the standings. But it seems that he is determined to not put himself in the same position in 2025.

Dahmen has been looking into the strengths and weaknesses of his game. And one of the areas where he is outside the top 100 on the PGA Tour for strokes gained is around the greens. He sits 141st for the 2024 season.

Joel Dahmen reveals the ‘wild’ dirty secret to chipping

But perhaps that may not be the case for 2025. Speaking on Subpar, Dahmen explained how he has already been given a completely different perspective on chipping in the off-season.

“Learned a few things on chipping and putting as well. You always think TPI is just like this 3D image and they only do golf swing. All of a sudden, I hit a few chips and Dr. Rose was like, ‘yeah, this is how the best chip, and this is how you chip’. And I was like, ‘oh, finally a way to quantify it’. It’s not like, ‘you need to be outside’,” he said.

“So the dirty secret of chipping is no great chipper lowers their centre of their body mass, their centre of gravity down through impact. Every great chipper goes up. It’s completely wild.

“I’d never heard that and I didn’t understand it. And he’s like immediately ‘I bet your strikes were not great’. I’m like, ‘well, yeah’. And then three chips in, I was going up and I pured them.

“Watching Spieth on it, Stricker’s great, Scottie’s probably the most underrated, or even Xander Schauffele around the greens is really special; and I was watching some Spieth videos even just last night, and it is amazing how much up he actually comes through. We’re talking inches in this, a couple inches, but every great chipper goes up with the body mass through the ball, and I had no idea on that.”

Where the short games of Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele rank in 2024

It probably is an underrated part of Scottie Scheffler‘s game because he is so good at everything else. Apart from his putting, every part of Scheffler’s game puts him in the top 20 for strokes gained. But, while he is number one tee to green and with his approach play, he finds himself in a lowly 17th around the greens.

Schauffele meanwhile, is 42nd. He is however, first for scrambling on the PGA Tour in 2024.

Interestingly, Jordan Spieth had a really disappointing year by his standards, with his wrist injury seemingly plaguing him. He was 108th for strokes gained around the greens, having been 28th in 2023.

But if the technique is there, then perhaps it would be no surprise to see Spieth return to somewhere around the top at some stage in the future.

And perhaps Dahmen may now make inroads in joining him when it comes to his chipping.
