The rise of Scottie Scheffler has been an unbelievable one, when you consider that the world number one was going into the 2022 season still awaiting his first win on the PGA Tour.
Scottie Scheffler‘s 2024 season is going to be remembered as one of the greatest of all-time. Of course, the 28-year-old has won eight times worldwide, with victories at The Masters, Bay Hill, The Players, The Memorial, the Olympic Games, and The Tour Championship.
When it comes to his game, there is no clear weakness – particularly tee to green. Unsurprisingly, he is first on the PGA Tour for strokes gained this season. He is first for tee to green and approach play.
Meanwhile, Scheffler is second for strokes gained on the PGA Tour off the tee, despite being down in 66th for driving distance. And it turns out that a certain driver played a big role in turning the American into one of the very best with the longest club in the bag.
Jason Day reveals what saved Scottie Scheffler from the driver yips
Speaking on Skratch about his own driver, Jason Day suggested that one particular club transformed Scheffler’s driving game earlier in his career.
“I talked to Scheffler about this, because he was talking to me about the driver and I said, ‘did you ever use the Ping driver?’ And he goes, ‘yeah I did, it saved me’. He had the driver yips,” he said.

“So he was saying that the Ping driver saved him from the driver yips, and all of a sudden, he just turned into the beast he is now.”
How Scheffler’s driving has improved during his time on the PGA Tour
Scheffler has definitely been one of the better drivers throughout his time on the PGA Tour. He was 10th for strokes gained off the tee during the 2020 season, the year following his promotion from the Korn Ferry Tour.
But there was a dip in his fortunes around 2022 when he dropped to 37th for strokes gained off the tee.
| Season | PGA Tour rank for strokes gained off the tee | PGA Tour rank for driver distance |
| 2020 | 10th | 16th |
| 2021 | 17th | 36th |
| 2022 | 37th | 19th |
| 2023 | 1st | 31st |
| 2024 | 2nd | 66th |
That may have prompted some changes as Scheffler has been almost flawless off the tee in the last two seasons – emerging as, by far, the best player in the world.
So perhaps it should not be a surprise if a number of players try a Ping driver at some stage following Day’s comments.
