Jason Day probably has a better perspective than most when it comes to the best of the best on the PGA Tour over the last two decades, having made his debut on the circuit back in 2006.

When Jason Day started on the PGA Tour, Tiger Woods was still somewhere near the peak of his powers. And the Australian, of course, made his most recent Presidents Cup appearance earlier this year, competing against the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele at Royal Montreal.

So he has certainly seen his fair share of all-time greats during a career which, so far, includes one major title and a run at world number one. And he has now suggested who may be the most talented players he has played alongside.

Speaking in a quick fire Q&A on Skratch, Day was asked to name the best player he has played alongside during his career, with the one rule being that he could not pick Tiger Woods. And he opted for two of the men who have also climbed to world number one at one stage or another.

“It’s either got to be Rory or Dustin Johnson,” he said.

The success of Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson

Day is not alone in his appreciation of the Northern Irishman, with Tommy Fleetwood recently claiming that McIlroy is the most talented player of his generation. He has won four major titles, while he is on the verge of winning his sixth Order of Merit on the DP World Tour.

It has almost gone under the radar that he has won three times worldwide in 2024, too.

Meanwhile, it was a much more disappointing season for Johnson. He finished 14th in the individual standings on LIV Golf, and it does appear that the best years of the 40-year-old’s career may now be just edging behind him.

But there was a spell when Johnson was often blowing fields away. He finished in the top six in five of the seven majors played across 2019 and 2020, culminating in his win at The Masters.

In fact, 2024 was only the second year since 2009 where Johnson failed to register at least one top 10 finish in the majors.
