Jason Day has named the PGA Tour event that saw the fastest greens he has ever seen, claiming that the organisers were determined to ensure that records were not broken.

Day has seen it all on the PGA Tour over the years. The Australian is a former world number one who won the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

That victory at Wisconsin was one of five for him that year.

Of course, winning a major is the pinnacle for many. But he also secured a hugely significant victory the following year, as he triumphed at The Players Championship.

The Players is the flagship event on the PGA Tour. And Jason Day was able to win by four having led after every round at TPC Sawgrass.

But perhaps the margin of victory should have been even greater.

Day was leading by four at the halfway stage after carding rounds of 63 and 66. Greg Norman‘s record score of 24 under par was in his sights.

However, the greens proved to be a completely different animal over the weekend – so much so that Day picked out the event for having the fastest putting surfaces he has ever played on when asked on The Bryan Bros YouTube channel.

“The Players Championship when they lost the greens. They must have been at least 20,” he said.

“I was lagging 10 footers. I kid you not, 10 footers, I would be saying, ‘okay, where do I need to leave this’ from 10 feet. I think I was 16 under through two rounds and was on the cusp of beating the tournament record, and they’re like, ‘we can’t have that’. Everyone was four-putting from everywhere. It was insane. That was the fastest.”

Jason Day shares the three keys that led him to world number one

Reaching world number one is a dream for most aspiring golfers, with most of the greatest players reaching the summit of the rankings over the last four decades.

The world rankings may have lost some of their credibility since LIV Golf started out – Jon Rahm is 71st currently – but it is still a significant moment when a player manages to reach top spot.

Day has spent nearly an entire year at world number one across his career. The Australian initially got to top spot in September 2015 – the month after winning the PGA Championship.

He went on to spend 47 weeks at number one between 2016 and 2017. And in the same video, he outlined the three factors which got him there.

“Long driving, long, straight driving. Putting, I was the best at putting. And my mental game – I knew that there was no one better than me on the golf course. And that took me a long way too. So they were the three things,” he said.

“If you look at my putting stats, if I hit it to 60 feet, I’m like, ‘I’m going to hole it’. That ties into the mental game as well. There’s a lot of belief there.”

It is going to be fascinating to see which player is able to take Day’s words to heart and one day knock Scottie Scheffler off his perch.
