J.J. Spaun’s US Open win remains one of the stories of the year in golf for 2025 but he’s now had to respond to suggestions Wyndham Clark might have helped him along.
Spaun holed a huge putt to seal the deal at Oakmont and write his name into the history books in the process.
However, while Spaun celebrated his win wildly and everyone has enjoyed speaking to him and about him since, Wyndham Clark made a bit of a bizarre suggestion in the aftermath.
Clark suggested that it was Spaun taking inspiration from him over the change of putters at Oakmont.
“No, no, not — zero. J.J. got inspiration from me, I used it before he did. No, no, it’s just coincidence, but it is a great putter, I’ve always loved it. It’s easy to stroke. Yeah, hopefully it stays hot and we keep it in the bag,” Clark said at the time when asked if he’d taken inspiration from Spaun with his putter choice.
Now though, Spaun has responded to those comments.

J.J. Spaun comments back at Wyndham Clark after US Open putter claim
Spaun has been speaking on the SubPar Golf Podcast this week ahead of the Scottish Open and the conversation soon turned to his US Open win.
In particular, those comments from Clark were brought up, although Spaun seemed to suggest Clark had nothing to do with his success.
“I did see that quote. I did not know that he inspired me. But maybe he did, maybe he inspired me to try it from watching him putt with the non-Lab. I did see that. That was strange. Maybe there was some sarcasm there,” Spaun suggested.
Dub, he’s Dub. That’s such a Ron Burgundy…At home I’m just like try this and he’ll look at it and he’s like ‘this is pretty nice’ but it was never the other way around. So 0%. We love you, Dub!”

J.J. Spaun can be Team USA’s wildcard for the Ryder Cup
With so many of the US team set in stone for so long and the star names we usually see likely to be on display, Keegan Bradley may have actually dropped on in having someone like Spaun on the team.
Spaun seems to have a cool and calm demeanour about him that comes across as if he’s not bothered or flustered by things.
This reaction to Clark’s comments, for example, is another demonstration of him keeping cool and almost laughing things off instead of escalating.
With a Ryder Cup coming up that is set to be all about emotion and passion at Bethpage, having Spaun on the team for the USA could actually be a huge blessing.
